[OSList] Lurker game

Hello everybody,

I am new to this list (applied in October) and fairly new using OS for
facilitation - I am definitely a chick among you ;-)
Hence so far I was only lurking… feel I have nothing to contribute but to
listen/read and learn (if my inbox is not full with other urgent things).

I liked the comment from Paul Levy and Michael Hermann to this OSList game
and would like to reply to the questions from Michael.

1. when did you first hear about os or ost?

2009 at an Art of Hosting training

2. what was the hook?  how did you notice it might have value?

I love the simplicity and the self-organisation. As well as the “honesty”
how OS works because the first time as caller I had first non and at the
end one participant - it she was the right person for me.
Further OS fits to my spiritual and business values in life.

3. when did you notice that you'd started letting it inform how you live?

During an OS training I realised that this is exactly the method I love to
use and personally need more because I learn more and more how to let go
and trust the process of the team. The principles are perfect guidelines in
every gathering too!

4. what has happened since then?  what difference does it seem to make?

…listening, observing, waiting. Everything needs its time. If I pull on the
grass it will not grow faster ;-)

Regarding readability in this OSList:
Is there the technical possibility if someone replies to an email (that was
already a reply to one or more other emails) to hid the original email(s)?
A kind of drop down menu that I can open optional the emails below to which
it is referring?
I would feel that this would make it easier to read it. Otherwise I get
lost when I scroll down… and usually never get until the end because it is
so long.

We discussed OSLIST culture, and how the culture of OSLIST may not

...we talked a bit about how the culture of OSLIST /might actually be
kind of intimidating for new people/ to participate in.

The Game

We have no idea how many "regular lurkers" are in the group...we talked
about trying to find out.

So: if you are a "regular lurker", someone who examines these OSLIST
threads periodically but does not actively participate ...  are you
willing to play a little game?

The Lurker Game: you are invited to play...

1. *...The goal* is to collectively get some idea of how many of us on
the list are "regular lurkers".

2. *...The rules* are:

 * If you consider yourself a "regular lurker", consider opting in to
   the game, by replying...
 * If you reply, absolutely nothing further will be asked of you. All
   you are doing is identifying yourself as someone who lurks. That's it.

3. ...We'll all track *the progress* by watching the thread, and seeing
how many reply over time.

4. ...Participation is *opt-in*.

I've facilictated around 50 gatherings using Open Space Technology.

And therein lies a possible interesting conundrum.

Because I have open space thousands of times. I have also never opened
space quite like the next time it is going to happen. So the number if many
and zero.

I've also opened space improvising around open space technology. And Open
Space Technology has changed around me. Self-organisation has tinkered with
the "recipe" - the one in the guide. But that gets talked about a lot less
on this list and, increasingly, a bunch of "open spacer" are sharing those
stories elsewhere.

There is no such thing as open space technology. There is no guide. There
is no "founder", there are no gatekeepers; yet there are all of these
things.

Tomorrow might just be my first ever Open Space.

i woke up this morning thinking about this game, thinking in a direction
similar to paul levy.

i am the nominal leader of a community garden now for four years.  my
management is deeply informed by my learning in and about open space.  does
it count as 1 or 4?

i once had a client who flew me in to facilitate a meeting.  we also built
a weblog and they contacted me a number of times, over several years, with
minor technical questions.  do the meeting and the blog count as one
together, or two separate?

i taught my grandma to say "ah," as she began the active process of dying.
she then repeated that seed syllable, a one-syllable mantra for peace, on
every breath of her last week of life.  she never opened her eyes but over
that week completely relaxed her whole body.  was that open space?  what
about up all night rocking a tiny, sick, neice?

i saw some new neighbors moving in the other day.  our neighborhood has a
lot of old houses and everybody moves in and starts updating everything.  i
offered my tools and experience.  if they never take me up on that
offer/invitation, does it count?  what if they just look for me at my desk
in our front window, and wave when they see me, while out walking their
dog?  that could happen a lot.  must count as only once?  or maybe it
doesn't count at all?

what about three opening briefings, on three consecutive days of open space
trainings i've done?  and what about all the things that happen after an
event, does the original opener get partial credit for things his/her
participants open later on?

to paul's point, i can ask questions like this about almost every situation
where i facilitated a meeting in an open space way, and about many other
situations where i was not "facilitating" anything, apparently.  this is
one of the ways i understand that we live in open space.

my approach to training folks in and about open space is significantly
focused on the crafting of invitations, in the belief that if we make
enough invitations, over time, people, groups and good work are going to
show up.

i also focus on discovering all the different ways that whomever i'm
"training" has already been opening space in their own lives.  i don't
think anyone could come to this work without having already done it before.
it would be completely un-understandable to them without prior experience.
i think people ask for training so they can do what they already know/do
better.  so i try to build on and from whatever understanding they bring.

so this question of seven or more is not so easy for me.  not sure it's
even helpful.  i'm more interested in questions like:

1. when did you first hear about os or ost?
2. what was the hook?  how did you notice it might have value?
3. when did you notice that you'd started letting it inform how you live?
4. what has happened since then?  what difference does it seem to make?

and so on.  a new game?  the next round?  maybe.  or maybe it's just the
game Murli called OSLIST back in 1996?
