[OSList] Toyota or equivalent / Leadership

Exactly, Harrison. That is the most interesting part of the
article!

It reminded me "The
Age of Paradox", by Charles Handy, that is a profound writer on management
issues - he is from the UK and is probably more known in Europe than in the USA...

Thank you Artur. Brilliant article! Lots of juicy details for sure, but the best part, I think, is what the authors can’t say (describe), but only point to – the nature and quality of The Toyota Space, which they refer to as “culture.” The “magic sauce” is not to be found in all the steps and processes – but in what happens in between. Particularly insightful is their (authors) identification of paradox as a central phenomena in Toyota Space. Paradoxes open space. Honoring paradox keeps the space open – and growing. Masterful.

Hi Harold, Anna Caroline, et al,

I find the attached article, by Takeuchi, published at the HBR in 2008, very interesting.

Hi Carolina,

Alas, a tardy reply. Perhaps it will be useful. The literature around participatory leadership in Lean Manufacturing and Toyota in particular is vast and extensive. There are many voices, and nothing is particularly short and profound at the same time.

There is one voice teaching in the lean and agile communities that I find willing to challenge my thinking - and this post is one of the clearest I've seen about problems with the term leadership and inherent dysfunctions - especially in knowledge work:

http://flowchainsensei.wordpress.com/2012/07/30/leadership-or-fellowship/

This is also one of the most profound benefits I've found in Open Space. That it fosters fellowship dramatically by allowing people to self-organize based on affinity. Leaders implies followers. Following implies allowing the leader to do the thinking - which is a great waste of our sacred gray matter.

    Cheers,
    Harold
