Hi Harold, Anna Caroline, et al,

Hi Carolina,

Alas, a tardy reply. Perhaps it will be useful. The literature around participatory leadership in Lean Manufacturing and Toyota in particular is vast and extensive. There are many voices, and nothing is particularly short and profound at the same time.

There is one voice teaching in the lean and agile communities that I find willing to challenge my thinking - and this post is one of the clearest I've seen about problems with the term leadership and inherent dysfunctions - especially in knowledge work:

http://flowchainsensei.wordpress.com/2012/07/30/leadership-or-fellowship/

This is also one of the most profound benefits I've found in Open Space. That it fosters fellowship dramatically by allowing people to self-organize based on affinity. Leaders implies followers. Following implies allowing the leader to do the thinking - which is a great waste of our sacred gray matter.

    Cheers,
    Harold
