[OSList] 1,000 participants in 4 hours

Dear Chris,
since 2003, almost exactly a decade ago, when the 2108 event took place 
(HO and I facilitated, two languages) I have been picking my brain on 
how those 2108 participants did it.
We had no inkling on whether it would work.
After the intro into OST, about 200 people jumped up simultaneously. I 
held the mike (which I usually never do but HO insisted and he was right 
on target). We watched the time closely and after the first few people 
announced their issues in both languages it was clear, it would not 
work. So we asked people just to use their mother tongue only (other 
participants translated and I think translations were also done on the 
issue sheets on the bulletin board), that way it eventually averaged out 
to 8 seconds per issue to be announced. With 232 issues posted that was 
a total of 1856 seconds or a little bit more than half an hour.
We had figured on 150 issues max (we had done some very scientific 
extrapolation based on all documented os events we got our hands on) and 
had arranged for 50 spaces (we had three time slots)... the team did not 
create new spaces but simply handed out further balloons with the 
numbers 51 through 79 for folks to create the additional spaces which 
they did in the main room rearranging the cushions we had instead of 
chairs for the starting circles... the entire team flaking out after 
having been up since midnight to set up the event.
The next surprise we had was how fast and seemingly without problems 
people decided on which sessions to go to and find them. We did have 
very long walls for the bulletin board (three walls along three sides of 
the very huge tent, each wall for one of the starting times).

So, looking at the time for getting issues announced and for people to 
decide and find their sessions I would be more bold today (mind you, we 
did have a total of 8 hours with the beginning times spaced 1.5 hours). 
And based on my experience with many os-events since then, I find that 
the time people take for their breakout sessions is selforganized with 
some folks actually going to sessions at all three beginning times, some 
spending all three times in one group on one issue, etc....there never 
were feedbacks on session-time being too short (which I think also has 
to do with it being selforganized, nobody is forced to stick to "the 
schedule") but often remarks on the total time available being too 
little (why did we not do the whole event in open space, for instance).

The only way you can handle the noise is to have a first class 
professional PA System with technical staff managing it all the time.

As far as it being ambitious I myself would in fact not take the offer 
to facilitate but Sharon is bent on doing it. There may be a little more 
time available... in 2003 we started the event with a 30 minute break at 
7:45am and opening by the sponsor at 8:15 and getting into the 
introduction to OST at 8:20... at the end we had 30 minutes for the 
closing circle.
As far as the people having satisfying conversations is concerned, I 
feel that does not depend on the time "available". I have seen breakout 
sessions where 1.5 hours were between the beginning times and the groups 
taking 15 minutes or an hour or take three sessions for their issue with 
the composition of the group changing... and I have seen many break out 
sessions not taking place at all or being visited only by the 
convener...so I have given up on thinking about "satisfying" 
experiences, people organise stuff in a way that suits them... I do care 
more than most people around me can stand the conditions/framework etc. 
and spend time to convey to the entire group that it is their time and 
their space. They know best how to scale stuff...
And on the point of getting a feeling for the power of the forces of 
selforganisation, I just give up, no way to influence that (although 
control is impeding), the forces of selforganisation probably even 
resent that...
