It sure was inspiring for us as organizers to have all of you out there
contributing and involve yourselves with us at site in Swenmark. I remember
we used the term off-site participants. We had a beamer to show new posts
immediately and we also made copies to the reports I think. And it was so
much fun to have a team of “helpers” out there to assist with whatever
technicalities we bumped into – great teamwork! Txs again!

i'd forgotten this altogether, artur. and going back now to see it, i think
we were rather ahead of our time. wikis were really new. i don't know if
wikipedia had even started yet.

i thought the osonos cafe was rather remarkable: 5 days and as best i can
count, 27 different people checking in, from oz, europe (at the gathering
and not), usa, canada. harrison chimed in from maine. it was all in
english, but it didn't have to be. that wiki could handle spanish or french
or haitian creole just fine.

if you've never been to an osonos gathering, this page is a pretty good
teaser, as are some others, like the one you flagged, artur...
http://www.openspaceworld.org/cgi/netwiki.cgi?OSonOSinSwenMark/OSonOSCafe
...and some good notes in the debriefing session, too.

i guess the progress we made in marysville and svenmark got a bit lost when
osonos went to india the following year. maybe next year -- if not sooner
-- we can pick up a bit where we left off. openspaceworld.NET is still wide
open for hosting and posting, for any osonos or other event.

----

by the way, there is a fun story behind how wiki and open space came
together. i was facilitating an open space track at the 'agile/extreme
programming' conference in chicago in 2002. a guy named chris wege from
stuttgart showed me how to set up a wiki and i taught him and some others
about ost. we both went off and used what we learned -- and used it a lot.
so these bits abotu agile using ost and ost using wiki always makes me
smile.

thanks for the reminding, artur.

Thanks, Thomas and Michael H.

It was indeed the SwenMark OSonOS (2003) I was referring...

(I had planned to go, but then an helth problem, discovered in the previous
month, did not allow me to go (and the organizers, did not obliged me to pay
anything for the cancelation of my pre-commitement to go).

Anyhow, from my house, I could follow the discussions and even participate
in it.

I have selected a page (of the first session of the Proceeedings) to show
what was happennning. The proceedings were being typed in the wiki
immediatly after the session. That allowed for a follow up discussion, and
even for further comments, either by presencial participants or by anyone
that could not came, for whatever reason. Being ill, I had the free time to
participate (indirectly?) myself, which I did. I felt has if I was (almost)
there. See this session as an example:

all of the proceeding from marysville, australia, were posted to a wiki.
this was one of the earliest uses of the wiki that still holds half of the
content of the www.openspaceworld.ORG website. that was 2002, osonos10. i
was there in marysville and played caretaker for the whole wiki process. we
had a regular document, too, but a bit more happened online than in that
doc. http://www.openspaceworld.org/cgi/wiki.cgi?MarysvilleAustralia

then, the following year, thomas and friends posted all the svenmark notes
from osonos11. those got posted at the new www.openspaceworld.NET side of
things. http://www.openspaceworld.org/cgi/netwiki.cgi?OSonOSinSwenMark

after that, the planners for goa did not apparently have an interest in
continuing this and things when in another direction.

and, yes, as artur says, we had wikis set up for many languages, haitian,
iberia (spanish and portuguese), estonia, italian, maybe french, too.

i've offered web support to osonos hosts since then, but as more and more
options became available and known and accessible to people everywhere,
nobody else has taken me up on this.

personally, i think i prefer a weblog format for posting notes, unless there
is a bunch of action and work and other meetings going to spring from a
gathering.

looking forward to the new wiki, and wondering if it'll be the sort of place
where many future osonos's can be reported.

thanks, m

Hi Artur

During the 11th World OSonOS in “Swenmark” (2003) we used a wiki to capture
proceedings and invite people to participate on distance during, before and
after the event. The proceedings and the wiki is to be found among the other
OSonOS proceedings on OSW.org

With assistance from Michael, Chris and others it worked wonderfully! I
think.

Dear Holger and others:

Thank you for creating the Wiki for WOSonOS 2010 online digital
documentation.

I have already sighed in. But I would like to request to the two "note
takers" of the two sessions I have convened, if they could be so kind to
"interpret" their own characters and put the report in the Wiki. Thank you.

Anyhow, Holger, from your post it may seem that it is the first time the OST
community is using Wikis. And it is not. 9 years ago, in 2001, Michael
Herman created the space <http://www.openspaceworld.net/>
http://www.openspaceworld.net/, that was, and still is, a Wiki. In that same
year, some of the "international language pages", then created, have used
wikis, and the Iberian one still is in an wiki (
<http://www.openspaceworld.org/cgi/iberia.cgi?>
http://www.openspaceworld.org/cgi/iberia.cgi?), now closed due to spam and
short of resources to cleaning it up every day.

And in one of the two following years (I think the next one, but I am not
sure), all the reports have been created directly in a wiki (that I cannot
find anymore) where they could be edited and commented by anyone in the
world in real time, thus giving the possibility to anyone that could not
came to OSonOS to have a sense of what was happening and really commenting.
(What can be more inclusive than that?). Maybe that could be something to
have repeated in one (or both) of the two following WOSonOS's - next year in
Chile and/or in London, in 2012...

Regards

Artur

Subject: Online WOSonOS Documentation

Dear WOSonOS participants and friends,

As we have announced in the action planning of the WOSonOS, we want to do an
online documentation of the results of the WOSonOS. For that, we have
created a Wiki. A Wiki is a document which we can edit all – it has the
spirit of Open Space. Don’t worry, writing in a Wiki is as simple as writing
in a Word document.

This is a great experiment – because not only the conveners but all
participants can take responsibility to convert the handwritten materials
into typed script. Let us do t like an Open Space – self-organized.

Please read the following instructions VERY CAREFULLY:

1. We start with the documentation of the proceedings; the action
planning will come a bit later.

2. With a separate email, you will get an invitation for our Wiki
(from the software company PbWorks). You will need to follow this invitation
to create an account. Please be assured that your data are secure, this is a
professional business version of a commercial programme.

3. On the landing page (after you have created your account) you will
find detailed instructions of how to proceed.

4. If you absolutely don’t want to use the Wiki for any reason, you
might also send us a Word file with the text you have typed.

5. I made the status of all of you that of writers –meaning you cannot
create or delete pages. If you want to be an editor, please let me know.

6. There is also comment functions: we can have discussions about all
issues and continue the discussions of the WOSonOS.

7. This will not work if we are not passionate about and if we don’t
take our responsibility

With best regards

Holger Nauheimer
