For us, here in the UK, it’s about a lot more than the stock exchange. Since the reckless decision to hold this unnecessary referendum - an attempt by a power-greedy man to hold on to his power at all costs - the country has been split in half. To dismiss voters and campaigners as idiots is to belittle and denigrate some very real feelings of alienation, disengagement and fear that have been quietly bubbling up for a long time. It feels like history repeating, although the poverty levels are not as visible as in inter-war Germany (there have been no wheelbarrows full of cash to buy a loaf of bread - yet), the extreme rich/poor divide generated by an elitist system that simply doesn’t listen is possibly even more poisonous and dangerous because of this invisibility. It feels like there is no alternative, it feels like there is no control. Time and again, protest marches are ignored. Time and again, petitions are dismissed. Time and again, the big corporations are bailed out, unaccountable to the damage they cause, whilst struggling communities are derided as stupid, uneducated, worthless.

We aren’t crazy, or stupid. But we are divided, angry, impotent and in thrall to a system that feeds lie after lie, empty promise after empty promise, to people looking for a way out of the trap but unempowered to take responsibility for escaping themselves. Someone said to me today that we have moved to a post-truth society. (Michael Gove on television last week: “The British people are sick of experts”). The Leave campaign was built on outright lies, but it tapped into an emotional imbalance that had no other route of expression.

People in many places feel they have no agency or voice - the voting system here means that in general elections (and therefore almost all voting scenarios) the individual’s vote is mostly meaningless. The number of people now saying “I didn’t think my vote counted” is astonishing, but it’s not because they’re stupid, it’s because the space is not open. Their sessions never got called. The agenda has been fixed for so long, everyone has forgotten how to use their two feet.

Some interesting statistics have emerged. Among these is the fact that the 48% who voted Remain trust largely in experts, whilst those that voted leave trust no one. For me, this highlights the greatest lesson to be learnt. Good conversation - face-to-face, crossing class and professional barriers - has been sorely lacking. Politicians, bankers, bureaucrats are described all too often as “faceless”. A crucial connection between the systems of power and the people living daily lives within those systems is utterly lacking. That one MP who diligently tried to create such a connection was violently murdered on the street by a right-wing extremist shows how far the rift has grown. Dialogue is met with violence.

Don’t laugh at this, please, because it’s an illness half the world is sick with. We think Trump’s rise to power is crazy, hilarious, madness - how can America be so stupid? we were saying last year. Now we know. It’s not stupidity, it’s a total communication breakdown, it’s an ideological Berlin wall, and it’s being built higher every time we call each other ‘stupid', ‘crazy', ‘idiot'...

You may have noticed a certain shaking in the World Order. It registered
611.21 on the Dow Jones. That's a negative 611.21. Essentially wiped out all
gains for the year. Money is only what you think it is and . suddenly.
pooof! IT wasn't !!!

One of the "trending stories" on the New York Times was about Brits Googling
to find out what they had done to themselves. Marvelous. It doesn't seem to
be "trending" anymore or I would send it to you. But such things do come and
go.

Of course there has been a massive cast of characters, casting stones at
everybody else. Idiots! .along with a smaller set who are sure they know
exactly what to do, how to do it, and who should be in charge. Themselves,
of course.

Definitely interesting times.

Might be something worth talking about?

This is called opening space, seeing who shows up, and knowing that whoever
cares will be precisely the right people for the conversation. Of course we
didn't do a lot of "pre-work." Who knew the Brits were going to be a crazy
as they were/are? - or are they? And no matter. Serious stuff never happens
on schedule, according to plan. when we are all prepared.

And to quote a great saint (Brian).. Whenever.

Dear friends and colleagues,
We do indeed have an interesting opportunity as people who care about
facilitating OST to open space for conversations that would be useful,
enlightening, and bridging across divides. Change is a constant.
Accompanying change as constant is loss even if there are also gains.
Accompanying loss is the work of grief. I long ago concluded that we are
all of us in the work of grief all of the time.

I believe that to successfully facilitate OST, it is important to avoid
positionality, in other words, to be neutral. If in the face of change, you
cannot maintain neutrality, my question to you all is 'what can you do for
yourself to get into neutral on any 'issue' however big and messy, and what
can you do to regain your balance. Staying in personal balance, and
rebalancing quickly when getting knocked out of it, is of great service in
these interesting times we live in.

Where can you 'open space'? Anywhere and everywhere. It might begin at home
with just a few people gathered. I invite you to breathe first, get in
personal balance, leave positionality behind, and be of service.

one of the few truths I have learned in my life is 'nothing is as it
appears to be' and another is 'live and let live'. What may seem bad,
brings perceived good. What may seem good, brings perceived bad. While all
of this is going on, by opening space, we can assist people in being
genuine. I wholeheartedly believe that when people are genuine, their
beauty comes out.

I encourage you to go to
http://www.dalarinternational.com/daily-inspiration/ and choose a card to
help you reflect on what you personally might need to develop in yourself
right now to regain your balance. I just chose a card and got 'leadership'.

Warmly,
Birgitt

Thanks Jeff.

What I loved was the theme, crossing over from one understanding to another.

Beautiful to be in it, and to see these varied expressions of that.

Read these poems! Love these poems. Vote for these poems! By June 30.

(I hope this fixed the format)

The semiannual OSLIST Limited Form Poetry Contest begins now! We have 11 entries in the contest below.

As a member of oslist you have five votes or "virtual sticky dots" to use. Please reply TO ME only - NOT the oslist - or write rjeffaitken at gmail.com<mailto:rjeffaitken at gmail.com> <mailto:rjeffaitken at gmail.com> with

- the number of the poem.
- the number of dots you are giving that poem.

The contest ends Thursday June 30 at midnight California time. The new Poet Laureate will be crowned with a virtual laurel of leaves on July 1.

AND (drum roll) the new Laureate will be awarded a copy of Chris Corrigan's newly beautifully published book The Tao of Open Space. Thanks Chris.

Apologies for any formatting issues. If you sent a poem and it's not here - let me know asap!

(I offered poems to the celebration but not to the contest. Let our new Laureate be chosen now! - Jeff)

With a shoutout to our dear departed Ralph Copleman z''l who originated the Celebration and Contest...

Here are the poems - enjoy!

1:

It was obvious there was pain.

Feelings hurt. Wounds infected.

Hopes, dwindling relentlessly over the horizon called ?not today.?

It was the story underneath, finally excavated,

that began to change everything.

2:

??? sit around circle
???. Look to know each other
??? take pen n paper
??? describe your theme
??? choose a space n time
??? invite people to discuss
??? bees keep busy
??? butterfly dances
??? now is right time
??? gather with your heartl
??? end is also start

3:

We are spreading out to the centre,
Unravelling to the core;
We are flowing in the stillness,
Living less being more.

The space it is opening,
The circle spirals in;
The frozen turns to water,
The frown becomes a grin.

4:

Wenn ich sein kann
wer ich bin
kann ich werden
wer ich sein kann

When I can be
who I am
I can become
Who I can be

5:

Moo

We moved
To overcome
Frames
Stale and hardened

We mooed
Crossing over
Grassy fields
Verdant minds

We mowed
Sharp shears
Breaking through
Rigid thoughts

We mooed
As we moved
On mowed
Open spaces

6:

??????? Invite to sit a circle. Look to know each other

??? ???Take pen n paper; describe your theme

??? ???Choose a space n time; call people to meet

???????Bees keep busy butterfly dances now is right time

???? Gather or leave with your heart

7:

???????Invite a circle, look around, take a pen and paper

???????Choose a time-space, describe your topic

??????? Bees and butterflies are dancing, now is right time

???????Gather or leave with your heart, end is also start

8:

We have a right to treat each other well

knowing from the depths of authenticity

yet mysterious beyond human understanding

that good things emerge whenever we do.

What wonder filled constancy!

9:

Life is a subtle affair

in which we do well to notice

that coupled in the swirl of the dance

is the real joy of living in togetherness

amid still feelings of oneness.

10:

there was an old codger from maine
who said open those spaces again
for all those who did
I lift off me lid
and welcome all those who just came

11:

The space a circle

Three-dimensional circuit

Transmitting love-light

Many of us brits were in the 48%. Who voted to stay in and probably trying to become Scottish or Irish

And 75% of people aged 18 to 25 were in favour of staying in.

The vote wasn?t about the eu but was caused by persistent inequality and generated fear of the other by a ruling elite that should have known better.

The Uk will ultimately be ok ish

The fear will start if the rest of the EU folds as a result. Not so much opening space but creating a black hole

Politicians ride waves or at least help to shape them and fear is one of the items in their tool chest. ?

Fear of the other is such a powerful tool. Advertisers know that.?

I was not surprised with the BREXIT (the UK vote lo leave).

I have heard that human civilizations go in cycles, like the whole planet itself.?

There is something of a strange kind of energy that is accumulating recently and that started with the Arab springs, certain equivalent movements in China and Europe, namely in Spain that is going to face elections this weekend.

These spontaneous?movements?are the bedrock of a new breed of political parties in Europe. In Greece and in the city of Rome they won the majority.

Alas, this energy also reveals itself in non-constructive modes.?

The riots prior and during the UEFA cup games are also an evidence of this energy in latency.?

Who knows this is also what happened in England? The manifestation of a societal energy that is mad at something. A will that resists the rain in polling day. A will so in-depth that the day of vote some realize they have lied to themselves during the opinion polls.?

On the TV news I remember this British guy from the public saying: "in my heart, I will say leave but with my head, I must vote to stay." ?

The heart took control and bingo - a huge stone was thrown in the pond.?

I also would have voted to leave.

The EU pond is murky. We see waves of refugees and children dying in the see - WAIT A MINUTE did I said children are dying in the mediterranean?sea?

In spite of the honorable intentions of their founding fathers the EU remains a private club of nations whose political representatives selfishly seek to please their own constituencies.

I suspect the US history can teach our EU politicians how to build a united land. US is the land where OST emerged in recent years and that is part of the same strange energy ?

Are we going to close the cycle and get back towards where we started as a single global tribe 50.000 years ago??

I see the BREXIT has an opportunity for that.?

The EU needs reinvention.?

Keep calm and carry on.

Dear Birgitt,

something that works for me is to be totally partial and not in any way
neutral, in fact being utterly positional, in my work as facilitator: I
focus all my positionality on what I love to do most, being fully
present and totally invisible... getting out of the way of the force of
selforganisation, not giving in to my urge to take control.
This occupies me so much that I dont even notice what it is that folks
have gathered for. If I were to become interested in, bingo, I am
visible and cant take care of my most important activity: Doing nothing.

Regarding grief it seems to me that I am not into grief work ever never.
Grief is in many ways similar to the Force of Selforganisation. It
simply takes over, I have nothing to do with it. Of course, if I fight
it, I will get stuck. If I were to fight the Force or the Wave as a wave
rider (or try to shape it) I would simply crash. (I am saying all this,
gads, without ever having been a "real" wave rider... as a kid I
remember the joy of being swhooshed a few yards in shallow water by
incoming waves, lying on a wooden board).

What I find useful is to be aware of grief working with me or an
organisation or with the Brexit event. The stages are pretty well known.
In the light of that I am fully flabbergasted on how, minutes after the
Brexit, before even anyone had time to scream "shit", the busy
EU-functionaries had all kinds of ideas on what the EU and the UK needed
 to do immediately.
That stance is what probably got "us" into this mess in the first place.

Greetings from tropical Berlin

Dear friends and colleagues,
We do indeed have an interesting opportunity as people who care about
facilitating OST to open space for conversations that would be useful,
enlightening, and bridging across divides. Change is a constant.
Accompanying change as constant is loss even if there are also gains.
Accompanying loss is the work of grief. I long ago concluded that we are
all of us in the work of grief all of the time.

I believe that to successfully facilitate OST, it is important to avoid
positionality, in other words, to be neutral. If in the face of change,
you cannot maintain neutrality, my question to you all is 'what can you
do for yourself to get into neutral on any 'issue' however big and
messy, and what can you do to regain your balance. Staying in personal
balance, and rebalancing quickly when getting knocked out of it, is of
great service in these interesting times we live in.

Where can you 'open space'? Anywhere and everywhere. It might begin at
home with just a few people gathered. I invite you to breathe first, get
in personal balance, leave positionality behind, and be of service.

one of the few truths I have learned in my life is 'nothing is as it
appears to be' and another is 'live and let live'. What may seem bad,
brings perceived good. What may seem good, brings perceived bad. While
all of this is going on, by opening space, we can assist people in being
genuine. I wholeheartedly believe that when people are genuine, their
beauty comes out.

I encourage you to go
to http://www.dalarinternational.com/daily-inspiration/ and choose a
card to help you reflect on what you personally might need to develop in
yourself right now to regain your balance. I just chose a card and got
'leadership'.

Warmly,

Dear Paul,

I had to grin thinking of politicians helping to shape waves.
Have you ever seen anyone shaping a wave? I mean the waves in an ocean
or even a pond?

I is geared to stay calm and to carry on, thanks for reminding me

Recently, I'm surprised by the response of some of my friends to Brexit.
The vote is a clearly a vote for the decentralization of authority.

I've always associated the decentralization of authority with:
self-organizing teams, responsive organizations, open space,
self-management, Law of 2 Feet, a self-organizing universe, etc.

Many of my friends who claim to like these ideas do not like Brexit
whatsoever.

Clearly, missing something important. I am asking for help. Will you
help me with this?

I have heard that human civilizations go in cycles, like the whole

There is something of a strange kind of energy that is accumulating

These spontaneous movements are the bedrock of a new breed of political

Dear Liz,

My heart has been aching regarding Brexit, much like it aches when I encounter any disruption or ?litte tremor? as Harrison names it. Disruption represents an ending, a death. I ache for the grief of so many. And I ache for what you point to.

Disruption can also represent an awakening. When grief has done its work, this is what I am opening the space for in my own consciousness.

By definition, elections force us to engage in dualistic thinking. We know that life is much more complex.

For those of you on Facebook, I found this AthensLive interview quite provocative. Mark Blyth, professor of Political Economy at Brown University, talks with?#?AthensLive? <https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/athenslive?source=feed_text&story_id=1723377684600928> about the ?#?Brexit? <https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/brexit?source=feed_text&story_id=1723377684600928> vote and the ramifications on the ?#?UK? <https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/uk?source=feed_text&story_id=1723377684600928> and across ?#?Europe? <https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/europe?source=feed_text&story_id=1723377684600928>. He also considers the current situation in ?#?Greece? <https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/greece?source=feed_text&story_id=1723377684600928> and the long run effects of what he calls "Trumpism?. https://www.facebook.com/AthensLiveGr/videos/vb.1579285212343510/1723377684600928/?type=2&theater <https://www.facebook.com/AthensLiveGr/videos/vb.1579285212343510/1723377684600928/?type=2&theater>

His take is much more complex than Brexit being a vote for decentralization.

Namast?,
Christine

I've always associated the decentralization of authority with: self-organizing teams, responsive organizations, open space, self-management, Law of 2 Feet, a self-organizing universe, etc.
Many of my friends who claim to like these ideas do not like Brexit whatsoever.
Clearly, missing something important. I am asking for help. Will you help me with this?
