[OSList] Online Participation Before, During, and After WOSonOS!

Dear Michael,

I'm a bit surprised to be hearing about this now, as an email about it went
out to all Krakow participants more than three weeks ago. Since then, the
design has continued to evolve, as designs will. Your message today makes
me think you might not understand what is being offered.

We have not actually invaded anything. We have offered an invitation to
experiment, in the same way that we have several times before experimented
with making what happens at OSonOS available to friends and colleagues who
are not able to attend the physical gathering.

Qiqochat exists, as does skype and zoom and email and phones. All of that
was already going to be available to everyone in the Krakow gathering.
After our VOSonOS event in July, many people asked about doing something
similar during the Krakow gathering. The Krakow organizers liked this
idea, as well, and were right to accept our offer. Given this, and some
monetary support, Lucas and I took responsibility for setting it up and
making it free for all.

We have made it just a little bit easier to do what was already very
possible. We have no plans to shine bright lights into every breakout and
news session. We have simply offered to help conveners offer their
sessions to OS friends who can't make the trip to Krakow. The decision to
do this, or not, in every case, rests completely with the conveners
themselves.

Think of it this way... some years ago, one of the OT gatherings was held
on a lake where canoes were available. Some sessions happened in those
boats. Probably some people had some fear, or at least no fondness, of
water. They either avoided those few sessions, or they talked the convener
into having the session on dry land. You'll have similar options in
Krakow.

Having this online open space available creates some additional
possibilities for our community, like convening a Krakow session from afar
(with help from a Krakow friend) or creating an entirely online session.
All of this still driven by passion and responsibility. None of it takes
anything away from your experience in Krakow. And nobody knows if *any* of
it will actually happen! That's what we want to find out!

We might or might not be able to stream the opening for distant friends to
listen to it live. In the past, some openings have been recorded and made
available later. Marysville (OSonOS 10) was filmed extensively and turned
into a short video that's now available online. Our offer doesn't seem
very different from these and WOSonOS is already a kind of showcase for our
practice.

In short, all of these options are nothing particularly new or disruptive.
They seem to be simply the shapes of ongoing self-organization in our
community. As more and more work in organizations is getting done in teams
that are not co-located, this is learning we're doing along with many many
others, all to the good.

You are, of course, free to embrace, explore, avoid, or even continue to
protest these new things, as you choose. You are still in charge of one
person's experience in Krakow – but only one. I hope you'll leave space
for others to choose and explore for themselves, as well.

I wish you a good and fruitful experience there. Be prepared to be
surprised. It might yet/even be fun!

Michael
