>From Nonviolent Communication, I find “What do you need?” to be very effective in centring and grounding individuals before considering strategic responses.

“What do you need” is about “legitimate needs” (Galtung), ie what’s really important to you, or what really matters here? Rather than/before asking “what do you think should/could happen?”
