Funny that Wu Wei popped up so many times in various OST conversations in the past couple of weeks.
I wanted to share a little bit of a historical context  ... the philosophy was utilized during some warring periods of the Chinese history by some wise men with the intent to persuade the emperors (or tribal kings) not to work too hard in conquering lands, etc. so people could take a break, rest, and live a more peaceful life.
It was a privilege of the powerful and well-to-do who could afford to "do nothing" so the ordinary poor majority could work hard to make a living.

Whenever I hear Wu Wei, I couldn't completely separate the image of the "hard working" leaders who sacrificed their own people (whom they were supposed to protect) in order to expand their own power from the philosophical notion of  Wu Wei that the intellectuals enjoyed as an alternative way of life. There was so much hardship and suffering behind this seemingly "laid back" political advice.

Of course, this  notion of wu wei continued to be a strong force in the leadership/management philosophical debate relative to Confucius's teaching among Chinese. In the business world (or enterprise of any  sort), since ambition and achievement are considered critical ingredients to success, wu wei is hard to sell unless one truly understands the paradox behind it,  which is essentially what Brendan referred to below - the harder you try, the less you get. Once you can let go of trying to achieve something and go with the flow the universe, there is nothing you can't do. So "do nothing" (wu wei) becomes "do anything." Ah...life is free.

Thanks for the post-script Brendan! And, yes, the open, sharing spirit of the OS list impressed me from the get-go, and I felt safe and supported even among the often faceless text! Very unlike many other networks. 

I do really like the idea of giving up the need to make a difference. I think I have moved beyond the impulse to "change the world", but still itch to make a difference ;) 

It is certainly embodied in th Taoist concept of wu wei, which I tried to explain to someone recently who was struggling in their sincere and challenging social activist efforts, yet feeling so constantly frustrated by what did and didn't happen in their community and among the other activists.  

This person conveyed that they weren't really enjoying what they were doing, yet maintained that this was still what they wanted to do. To my sadness, they added on that they didn't need to be happy or at peace right now, and didn't know if they even wanted to be right now. 

This is when I attempted to share my rudimentary understanding of Wu Wei, which came out in kind of a confused jumble. 

I think a good question to ask ourselves before we venture forth on something is, would you still do wherever it is you are doing, if you could never know the impact it may or may not have? And also if nobody would else know of the impact of your involvement.  

A good thought for me to carry throughout my day - because it does impart more peace and flow in doing without attachment, if you can get there sincerely!
