[OSList] OSList Digest, Vol 46, Issue 14

Morrison, Joshua Dale via OSList oslist at lists.openspacetech.org
Fri Dec 12 16:57:28 PST 2014

I'm a regular lurker and learner. Have read a couple of Harrison's books (though I admit it is uncharacteristic of me to use first names in these sorts of messages....). Am attempting to get my college interested in Open Space as a way of tackling tough issues. We'll see how it goes! Am trying to tackle diversity issues with the method.

Definitely a lurker. I think I posted a couple of times. Such a positive list with world wide participants, so great. A cool combination of experienced practitioners and new comers.

I am an ?intermittent? lurkers, dipping in every now and then? I love OST; I value the ongoing existence of this listserv; I know and love many of you and enjoy acquaintance with others? I love the sense of security and support I gain in knowing that OS/tis list is there and will respond with generosity and wisdom any time I have a question? Sadly my current roles don?t offer much opportunity to use OS as often as I?d like, so I find myself distracted and pulled to many other overwhelming riches of information and connection? These days I am especially engaged with Restorative Justice/Restorative Circle - of a kindred spirit and paradigm?.

Blessings and appreciation to all,

Susan

Some of us were on a call on Tuesday, talking about Open Space....and
OSLIST....

...the participants at the time were....

Chuni Li
Daniel Mezick
Karen Davis
Linda Stevenson
Lucas Cioffi
Paul Levy
Peggy Holman
Skye Hirst
Suzanne Daigle
Tricia Chirumbole
Harold Shinsato

We discussed OSLIST culture, and how the culture of OSLIST may not actually
be very easy to figure out...

...we talked about how this list has hundreds upon hundreds of members, with
just 25 to 45 people (give or take) who post or reply with anything close to
a regular frequency, and how some speak with highly authoritative voices.

...we talked a bit about how the culture of OSLIST might actually be kind of
intimidating for new people to participate in.

The Game

We have no idea how many "regular lurkers" are in the group...we talked
about trying to find out.

So: if you are a "regular lurker", someone who examines these OSLIST threads
periodically but does not actively participate ... are you willing to play
a little game?

The Lurker Game: you are invited to play...

1. ...The goal is to collectively get some idea of how many of us on the
list are "regular lurkers".

2. ...The rules are:

* If you consider yourself a "regular lurker", consider opting in to
the game, by replying...
* If you reply, absolutely nothing further will be asked of you. All
you are doing is identifying yourself as someone who lurks. That's it.

3. ...We'll all track the progress by watching the thread, and seeing how
many reply over time.

4. ...Participation is opt-in.

To participate, just hit [Reply List] and enter "hey" and press [Enter]
...or...

... (optionally) just say whatever you might want to say, instead

We have no idea what might happen next; let's see what develops.

Thanks!
Daniel

Hi everybody, here in Bilbao+Mundaka (Basque Country) another lurker that
seldom participates!

I?ve met and made big friends with some of you during last years in Berlin,
London and New York gatherings.

I hope one day I?ll get the time to read and write more on the Oslist,
which I constantly recommend to people interested in OS.

Now we are working on how to better connect the OSnicks in the Basque
Country (here news from last Friday?s meeting, in Basque
<http://burumapak.blogspot.com.es/2014/12/gilagunak-gune-irekiaren-lagunak-sarea.html>
).

We are having our second bOSONOS in February 2015 (after our first Basque
Osonos, year 2013, see some photos here
<https://www.flickr.com/photos/56230454%40N08/sets/72157638372177016/>) and
we are starting a kind of local OSLIST in Basque -open to French and
Spanish too- soon. It?ll easy our communication, learning and interaction.

Best wishes,

Eleder

Hello good Open Space people

There is news from Iceland, the Nordic Open Space on Open Space will be here in 2015, reserve June 12th, 13th, and 14th for the event if you want to see Iceland and join the Open Space with all the busy Nordic Open Space practitioners.

We are also planning a trip to explore the open and sublime nature and history of Iceland with a lot of space available for deliberation and exploration, reserve June 15th, and 16th for that occasion.

Two training opportunities, at least, will also be on offer before the event
* Overview of different participatory methods - reserve June 9th for the full day event.
* An open space training where the participant will have a theme in mind for planning their own open space - reserve June 10th and 11th for the two day training.

I am looking now at different places for having the events, so do not book any accommodation before I have that sorted out. It may even be that we will find a meeting hall close to a beautiful nature reserve which could include most of the accommodations.

OK, so it been about 40 hours since the The Lurker Game got started;
almost 2 days.

Almost 70 replies. Some interesting responses! What is most interesting
is what and how people are choosing to disclose so much rich data. Like,
their start with OST, and in what year, what events they have attended,
etc.

There have even been some disclosures about the "why" behind the pattern
of reading but not writing to the list.

All in all, an interesting game so far!

Let's keep playing.

An excellent initiative! I love this game and shared this strategy with my participants for the workshop I deliver on the Art of Knowledge Exchange, where we were exploring and sharing tips on how to energize CoPs. The Art of KE guidebook is attached. As a KE practitioner, I have found the OST principals very useful and even had the privilege of inviting Harrison for a talk at the World Bank. Have attended workshops too. Have learnt a lot and browse through the rich knowledge sharing whenever I have a chance. Warm thanks and Happy Holidays!

We discussed OSLIST culture, and how the culture of OSLIST may not actually be very easy to figure out...

...we talked about how this list has hundreds upon hundreds of members, with just 25 to 45 people (give or take) who post or reply with anything close to a regular frequency, and how some speak with highly authoritative voices.

...we talked a bit about how the culture of OSLIST might actually be kind of intimidating for new people to participate in.

The Game

We have no idea how many "regular lurkers" are in the group...we talked about trying to find out.

So: if you are a "regular lurker", someone who examines these OSLIST threads periodically but does not actively participate ... are you willing to play a little game?

The Lurker Game: you are invited to play...

1. ...The goal is to collectively get some idea of how many of us on the list are "regular lurkers".

2. ...The rules are:

  * If you consider yourself a "regular lurker", consider opting in to the game, by replying...
  * If you reply, absolutely nothing further will be asked of you. All you are doing is identifying yourself as someone who lurks. That's it.
3. ...We'll all track the progress by watching the thread, and seeing how many reply over time.

4. ...Participation is opt-in.

To participate, just hit [Reply List] and enter "hey" and press [Enter] ...or...

... (optionally) just say whatever you might want to say, instead

We have no idea what might happen next; let's see what develops.

Thanks!
Daniel

Dear Adriana,

a pretty impressive group of polish colleagues - more than half a dozen
- invited WOSonOS 2015 to be in Poland.
As far as I know the dates were set, too:September 10 through 13.
There was also talk about it being in Krakow but as I understand a
number of other cities are competing. Dont worry we know that wherever
it happens will be the right place, right?
I myself love Krakow because it has a dragon and is one of the oldest
cities in Europe that has had a vision of Europe more than 150 years
ago. And, we had the first international gathering, in opens space of
course, on the "Interactive Organisation"...

I am sure news will be coming forth soon!

Greetings from Berlin (a pretty good place to pass through on your way
to Poland next year with more than 50 facilitators here anxious to connect).

To see some of them, have a look at the world map, precisely here where
you see all listed for Berlin itself
> http://www.openspaceworldmap.org/moreinfo/contactinfo.php?c_id=69&zip=1&

Have a great day either in Mexico or in Canada
cheers

OK, so it been about 40 hours since the The Lurker Game got started; almost
2 days.

Almost 70 replies. Some interesting responses! What is most interesting is
what and how people are choosing to disclose so much rich data. Like, their
start with OST, and in what year, what events they have attended, etc.

There have even been some disclosures about the "why" behind the pattern of
reading but not writing to the list.

All in all, an interesting game so far!

Let's keep playing.

We discussed OSLIST culture, and how the culture of OSLIST may not actually
be very easy to figure out...

...we talked about how this list has hundreds upon hundreds of members, with
just 25 to 45 people (give or take) who post or reply with anything close to
a regular frequency, and how some speak with highly authoritative voices.

intimidating for new people to participate in.

Thanks!
Daniel

Thanks for the affirmation. It would be a sad day to be "un-welcomed" from the circle of open space. I am still very much active with OST in my corporate world even if I am just a lurker in this forum. Hope you are all well!

OK, so it been about 40 hours since the The Lurker Game got started; almost 2 days.

Almost 70 replies. Some interesting responses! What is most interesting is what and how people are choosing to disclose so much rich data. Like, their start with OST, and in what year, what events they have attended, etc.

There have even been some disclosures about the "why" behind the pattern of reading but not writing to the list.

All in all, an interesting game so far!

Let's keep playing.

That's really lovely, Harrison. Along with what Michael H wrote
yesterday ("*Perhaps
a bit of conflict in the definition, as it seems to say that listening
isn't active participation."*) this makes me think of a favorite passage
from Shaun McNiff's book "Trust The Process: An Artist's Guide to Letting Go

(*with my emphasis added*):

?Which of course is so Open Space-y too.

Cristy just shared a book reference and it make me think about an other
book that has been useful tome as a facilitator it is Standing in the fire
by Harry Dressler. I meet the author in Guanajuato Mexico he is a very nice
person!
I really recomended his book!
