*World Open Space Day: 4 July 2010*

Open Space Technology (then known simply as Open Space – the “Technology”
bit came later) was used for the first time on 4 July 2010.

The occasion was the five-day Third International Symposium on Organization
Transformation that took place in Monterey, California.

Open Space Technology originator Harrison Owen tells the full
story<http://livingpeace.ws/SampleChapter.html>

I’m wondering how we might mark the occasion. Here are a few possibilities:

   - A global Open Space gathering on a global issue – separate events held
around the world, linked through the web, Skype etc. We could set up a Ning
social networking site to keep all interested parties connected before,
during and after the global gathering.
   - One-day Open Space tasters.
   - Blog articles.

Very few organisational technologies have lasted as long as Open Space
Technology. Let’s recognise this and celebrate the coming of age of Open
Space Technology. It’s almost 25 years old, it’s no longer weird or
particularly risky, it’s in tune with the zeitgeist (hence the relatively
recent arrival of its derivative, BarCamp <http://barcamp.org/>) it’s used
throughout the world in a very diverse range of settings, it’s proven and
it’s remarkably robust. (See my comment to the post Harrison Owen on
voluntary Open Space participation <http://www.osuki.net/?p=913>.)

If you have any thoughts or suggestions about how we might celebrate the
25th birthday of Open Space Technology, please leave a comment below.
