OSLIST Digest - 6 Nov 2006 to 7 Nov 2006 (#2006-295)

Hello all:

Due to my current lake of time I have changed to receive messages in the "digest mode". Even so I rarely have the time to open a digest. But when I do I fell disappointed and probably will have to unsubscribe completely.

Before doing that I will repeat something that I have already send to the list some time ago (1 or 2 years ago - and probably with a different set of subscribers to the list).

In messages to lists the netiquette recommends that participants:

  1) Quote only the relevant part(s) of the message they are answering to;
  2) NEVER include after their signature the full message(s) they are answering to.

This is so because messages to lists are distributed many times, and that technique uses too many resources, but also in benefit of those subscribers that receive messages in digest mode.

I don't remember if this remark is included in the FAQ's of the list, but I ask Chris to clarify if it is so and, if he agrees, include a reference to this and resend the FAQ's to the list.

As my previous message was not understood, I have decided, in a last attempt, to give the readers the possibility to see what a digest looks like without my recommendation being followed. Please note that "there are 8 messages totalling 4326 lines in this issue" of the digest, and that probably only 10% of that is new text, the rest being messages that the reader have already red, and there is no need to repeat.

Of course you are not obliged to read the digest... I apologise in advance to all the list member that receive the digest mode and to those that will consider my evidence impolite..

With best regards, from (today) sunny Portugal

  Artur

Hi Saimir,

it's so interesting for me to have an information like this because, just
this weekend with my team we talked about contacting the Albanian
organisations here in Istanbul. it's so good to hear that OST is popular in
Albania. Please keep in touch. After December we may do something together.
I am one of the guys in Turkey who have the Albanian roots:-) (one of the 5
milllion:-)) I don't know the Albanian language but we can manage in
English :-))

Thnks for sharing!
Best wishes

hi lisa, and all. i can't believe chris forgot to mention our
"hed-genda" in an os we did on bowen a few years ago. that would be
topics clothes-pinned to the hedge along one side of the yard we were
using for the big circle. there's a picture of it somewhere in our
openspacetech tag at flickr, but i don't have the direct link. m

Steve, thank you for your question. What would the risks be if we opened
space and it wasn't certain to be safe?

Do any of you have experiences which didn't turn out to be safe - and what
happened next in the organization? Do you follow up and ask what happened in
your client's organization, e.g. half a year later?

I hear some people saying they had one experience in Open Space which wasn't
well embedded in the organization and then got frustrated and decided they
would never go for it again. This of course is the worst case and bad
publicity for our passion, Open Space.

Please share your bad experiences, we can all learn tremendously from them.

Love, Catherine

Hope you don't mind a lurker chiming in here. As a guy who has been (and is)
in a couple of those organizations Tennyson mentions....and struggles with
finding a way to open the space, I'd hope that when you get a call from me,
or another explorer, you'll be open to going in there and doing what you
can. Most organizations have some folk who want to move toward better space;
sometimes they're fortunate enough to be in a space where they can assert a
little leadership to start down that path. But it is a dimly lit path and
many of their colleagues will discourage them. Those who've been down it
must come back and light the way, offering guidance and reassurance to the
newbies.

Seems like we have to fight the desire to only open space when we're sure
it's safe?

Zelle--

Fantastic! That was just the sort of low-down I wanted. Now I have a
good idea what you mean.

It is a wonderful way to open some space for people who often find it
closed by the "do-me" meetings so prevalent in our society. You are to
be congratulated for being innovative in opening these spaces.

Which brings me to something you told me off-line a few months ago,
something I think others might be interested in conversing around out
here in the open spaces (if you are willing): how you view opening space
in corporations and hierarchical organizations and similar settings
which seem to me to prefer closed spaces and control. Why spend your
time and energy trying to convince people against their natural
inclinations? Is it not an uphill battle, and would it not be better to
work where the seed could fall on more fertile soil?

Fantastic! That was just the sort of low-down I wanted. Now I have a

good idea what you mean.

It is a wonderful way to open some space for people who often find =
it

closed by the "do-me" meetings so prevalent in our society. =
You are
to

be congratulated for being innovative in opening these spaces.

Which brings me to something you told me off-line a few months ago,

something I think others might be interested in conversing around =
out

here in the open spaces (if you are willing): how you view opening =
space

in corporations and hierarchical organizations and similar settings

which seem to me to prefer closed spaces and control. Why spend your

time and energy trying to convince people against their natural

inclinations? Is it not an uphill battle, and would it not be better =
to

work where the seed could fall on more fertile soil?

Dear Reinhard

=20

What if you asked the client to name a metaphor? In hearing their =
stories,
the metaphor could emerge quite naturally. What was one of their =
greatest
successes? Was there a symbol involved or emerging from this? What do =
they
like or love about their organization? What do they want to hold on to =
no
matter what changes will happen? What has touched them especially in the
past about their work, their passion? What do they do best?=20

=20

I=92m sure you will find the metaphor quite naturally in drawing while =
they
tell you their stories. And you will all recognize it when it appears.=20

=20

Invite the space for it to emerge, and it will. Trust.

=20

Love, Catherine

dear friends of this net,

=20

a client is going to restructure a department with thousends of =
employees.
To spred the new structure he will hold meetings with the senior =

using a metaphorical picture story, which we will create.

=20

To find the right metaphor for this picture story we have a meeting next

Dear Alan,
Back from extended travel, I was pleased to find your kind email about =
my GT Today essay and our wider activities. Thanks so much for passing =
it on to your network. As we enter the next phase =96 developing GT =
Today 2.0, so to speak =96 we will wish to involve an expanded circle of =
GTI Participants people with strong interests and background for =
exploring, debating, and elaborating the possibilities for the future =
through our ongoing e-dialogue. If you, or others you know of, would =
have such an interest, do let us know. Meanwhile, all the best and =
thanks again.=20

Dear Paul and All (including bcc'd)=20

=20

I appreciate your gracious response to my distributing your thought =
provoking and 'hope-full' essay=20
The Great Transition Today - A Report from the Future =20

which spells out what a 'wonder-full' future is possible if we pay it =
due attention. (See Press Release below).*

And your invitation to participate.=20

I wish to express my interest in being part of the evolution of this =
most inspiring enterprise.=20

For I - and my many fellow facilitators - have passion and skills for =
processes through which people world wide may be included and enchanted =
to engage in bringing the bold vision into being. =20

Two such new processes are the focus of an article which has just been =
published, entitled 'Conversing Matters'=20

In this I outline how these new approaches are being used very =
imaginatively to create opportunities when addressing complex issues.=20

=20

It is featured in the November 2006 issue of XL Magazine which is =
distributed widely in Asia and increasingly beyond. This publication is =
produced by XL Results Foundation, an organisation for entrepeneurs of =
which I am a member.=20

=20

To entice you and others to examine how the ideas in the article =
may be of value I take the liberty of quoting (with her permission) a =
colleague in NYC who wrote:=20

=20

I LOVE your article. It is so well written, so clear, so heart =
touching. I can only image you will have executives knocking at your =
door. You express what happens, why, how who, when in most simple terms =
and leave nothing of importance out. It truly moves one to do want to =
do what you are offering.

=
=
Robyn S =
Berkessel =20

=20

[I received a lot of assistance in composing this piece].

=20

There are practitioners of these and similar processes all around our =
little blue planet who could be invited to facilitate the kind of =
conversations which focus on the vision and values you articulate. In =
doing so they could add to the vibes and vibrancy inherent in the =
emergence of the collaboration required on a global scale.=20

Among these practitioners are those who participate in the listservs of =
Open Space Technology and The World Cafe and others. =20

=20

In this vein, as I indicate in the article, World Cafe processes are now =
being used widely at showings of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. This =
enables people to talk confidently about what they noticed in the =
documentary and what appropriate actions could be taken in their local =
communities. And the scale and diversity of participation in =
conversational gatherings keeps growing ...

Could connecting with young people, such as through Youth Noise, be a =
'way to go' here?=20

I would add that there are two people who, in my opinion, could be key =
allies as they are networkers par excellence about things that matter. =
These are Tom Atlee of Co-Intelligence Institute =
http://www.co-intelligence.org/

and Dave Pollard of =91How to save the world.=92 =
http://blogs.salon.com/0002007/

As David Isaacs, co-founder of the World Cafe has noted:=20

yes, processes like the World Cafe and OS " did help to make 2084 happen =
"=20

what a ride it was!!

I wonder if you see that assisting Paul and his associates to co-create =
a 'coherent popular movement' could be a priority activity - and great =
ride:-) - for you?=20

Please contact Paul if you do.=20

Looking forward ...

Go well

* PRESS RELEASE

GTI Paper Series Released

Boston, MA, Oct.1 -- The Great Transition Initiative (GTI- =
www.gtinitiative.org) is a collective endeavor by scholars and activists =
who share a broad commitment to addressing the major problems =
confronting humanity: poverty, security, and the environment. GTI's =
mission is to imagine, assess, and advance a great transition to a =
global future of enriched lives, equity, solidarity and a healthy =
planet. It takes seriously the slogan of progressives everywhere that =
"another world is possible," but proposes that such a world must first =
be imagined creatively as a plausible human project.=20

GTI's network of 200 participants from 40 countries contributed to the =
preparation of this series =
(http://www.gtinitiative.org/default.asp?action=3D43) through a more =
than year-long process of general exploration of ideas, thematic working =
groups and review. The 15 papers in the series elaborate the global =
challenge, future visions, and strategic directions in various domains =
of culture, politics, technology, economy and society. The papers offer =
no "blueprint" of the future, but are meant to be imaginative ventures =
that engage and intrigue others to contribute to the enterprise of =
inspiring change beyond the crisis and despair of the day. According to =
Paul Raskin, the Coordinator of GTI and President of the Tellus =
Institute, the GTI's paper series will " sharpen the critique of =
conventional thinking, deepen the understanding of the global possible, =
identify critical levers for change, and promote a coherent popular =
movement."

The GTI is facilitated by the Tellus Institute (www.tellus.org), formed =
in 1976 as a a not-for-profit research and policy studies organization =
based in Boston, and now a world leader in assessing critical =
environment and development issues. Tellus has worked at every level -- =
global, regional, national, local, and enterprise -- bringing both =
vision and analytic rigor to fashioning strategies, policies and =
decision-support tools. Key foci have included energy, water, =
sustainable communities, corporate social responsibility, and climate =
change. Our projects are distinguished by an integrated perspective that =
illuminates linkages across spatial scales and the environmental, =
social, and economic dimensions of development. The Institute=92s =
sponsors -- foundations, government agencies, multilateral =
organizations, civil society organizations, and business -- reflect this =
diversity.=20

From: Herman Kasselman
Subject: 2nd OST

Hi everybody,

It is now 5:45am in South Africa and at 8:00 I will be doing my second OS=
=20
event. I can feel the tension and expectation in myself plus all the=20
usual feelings that goes with facilitating. It is exhilarating and I=20
cannot wait.

I am going with an open mind and lots of expectations. It is a small=20
group of 13 and they wanted to open space concerning their annual plannin=
g=20
for 2007. It is a group that will migrate to another unit in the=20
organisation and they want to be prepared.

I would like to thank you all on the list for just being there. It is suc=
h=20
a relief to know that though I will be alone during the one and a half da=
y=20
event, support will come from all the corners of the world.

Dear Herman,

I love that you can write very early in the morning about your upcoming
event, a few minutes later I read it here in the evening, and I can feel
your excitement and anticipation as if there is no distance at all. I am
sure that you will indeed have much support from all over the world.

Enjoy yourself!
Christy
