Moscow mentoring circle

> We'd like to share our impressions from our first OST mentoring circle
> held in Moscow September 3rd.

> It was facilitated by a new OST facilitator, Nikolai Silaev. In true
> OST spirit after opening the space he disappeared and only reappeared
> at the end.

> More than 20 people attended, most of whom had never been to an OST
> event. We'd announced this event in a variety of electronic forums
> including some trainer/consultant electronic discussions lists. A
> number of personal coaches came who were intrigued by the idea of
> mentoring and had never heard of OST.

> Unexpectedly, we spent the first part of what turned out to be a 6
> hour gathering explaining what OST is in open space. One of the
> participants had posted a topic essentially asking the questions "What
> is OST?" Participants had received an invitation explaining the intent
> of the event. The invitation included a weblink to a description of OST.

> We continue to be a little baffled by what to do when first time attenders to an OST
> mentoring circle event come to us ("experienced" OST facilitators) to
> "explain" OST. It is very easy to slip into an expert position and
> begin "explaining" OST. By the end most people seemed to have
> "gotten" OST.

> Among the topics:
> Who are the people who buy the OS idea?
> Tools for working with large groups
> How can we use OST in trainings
> Friendship and money: how can we keep relationships at work
> Managing your emotions
> How and where can we use OST
> What is OST?

> We also set up a "reading room" during the mentoring circle about
> which we got positive feedback. One coach who found himself
> bumblebeeing admitted later that he found it rather helpful to be able
> to participate in three conversations at once and also to be leafing
> Harrison's User's Guide even though his English is not top-notch.

> The "creative space" with children's books, paints, coloring pencils,
> play dough, balls, and soap bubble solution remained underused.

> And we found that running a global village silent auction in parallel
> was a bit much, too. Nevertheless some participants purchased some
> books on virtualistics (Mikhail Pronin's area of specialty)

> The Moscow mentoring circle was conceived of as a bi-monthly event.

> November 10-12, however, instead of the mentoring circle we will be
> running the OSonOSonOS (as previously announced), a meeting devoted to
> attracting interest and assistance and ideas in organizing the August
> 4-6 14th International OSonOS.

> Should you have any Russian-speaking colleagues who might like to know
> about this event, do let us know. We can send the announcement.
