The Pros and Cons of OST?

Hi, Allison -
(Allison is giving an OST presentation where new groups of people will
be rotating by every 10 minute or so for a mini-presentation)
Oh. I thought that you were in a 90-minute OST event where the organizer
was asking you to post a session that was a delivery of information on
something s/he wanted you to do.
So. Let's approach this like a poster presentation at a conference.
For those of you who do not know, a 'poster' presentation is where the
person offering the information (a scientist at a scientific conference
telling about some research they did, for example) stands in front of a
'billboard' (let us say 4 feet tall by 6 feet wide) as lots of
conference delegates walk around a huge room full of these
displays-with-people-in-front-of-them.
So Allison I know you'll be designing some very interactive stuff,
probably setting up a little circle of chairs and so on - I just wonder
if thinking of it as a poster presentation will spark any new ideas.
A good poster presentation creates a visually engaging environment that
tells a story, catches the eye of passers by, and interests someone in
coming to talk to the poster presenter to learn more.
Sometimes I give workshops at conferences in how to develop a poster
presentation, how to navigate a conference, things like that.
Some of the things we talk about:
* Think of how people wander around a marketplace and sweep
their eyes across everything to land on whatever may take their
interest. If someone were to only glance in your area for 2 seconds,
what would they see?
* Think of key images that represent the work, and the message
(so here you may want to create big, lush posters of the principles, law
and insects for your area, even set up an agenda wall where visitors can
write and post their session topic ideas (maybe little post-its instead
of big pieces of paper - I don't know how much room you'll have). In
this way they can see how diverse their ideas in response to a focusing
question/theme may be.
* Perhaps you'd like to add some full-page-sized color
photocopies of photos of Open Space - if you need them, come cut and
paste from my website Gallery (http://www.openingspace.net
<http://www.openingspace.net/> - see the word Gallery in the upper
right-hand corner of the page) or the place where Chris and Ted have
been posting some photos, or any of our several websites.
* Often at a poster presentation there is a large envelope
posted on the wall or a box on the floor (with a large sign that says
'take a handout to learn more about OST') and another envelope or two
('want more info? Leave your business card') for people who are not
stopping at your presentation but just walking by and want to
'self-serve'.
* Think about if you want a 'headline' or attention-grabbing
sentence, phrase or title that gives some essence of what you are trying
to present. You may wish to make a long banner to post at your area to
say what is happening in your area.
* You may even decide you want to wear something specific that
day so your clothing reflects the colors, energy and culture of your
presentation.
.just some random thoughts to spark some random thoughts.
Lisa
