The Question(s)

A brief consultation with Webster brought forth the following:
Manipulate--
1 : to treat or operate with the hands or by mechanical means especially in a skillful manner
2 a : to manage or utilize skillfully
b : to control or play upon by artful, unfair, or insidious means especially to one's own advantage
3 : to change by artful or unfair means so as to serve one's purpose
Always seeking the self-serving advantage -- I would like to think that I operated within the primary definitions. :-)

you and I usually move in -- it is a "bad word." But if I go to a
chiropractor or a therapeutic massage person -- and am not "manipulated" I
should be very unhappy. I think the significant issue is not to
manipulate or not to manipulate -- but rather to what end and to what
purpose. Hopefully, my ends and purposes are in line with the client. If
not, they should fire me. If so, I expect to be fully compensated. But
manipulaton comes with the territory, I think.

Yes Harrison,
It certainly comes with the territory, since you as the consultant have
chosen to serve the organization, not the individuals that comprise the
organization. Those individuals who are "mature" enough to sense
the "manipulation" have the choice to be or not to be "manipulated" (and
there is nothing wrong with choosing to be "manipulated"). Those who do
not have that maturity, may feel resentful - at some time in the future.
