Phil--

One of our clients understood this so well. We opened the doors a half hour
ahead of the meeting opening, with fresh coffee and a variety of snacks
ready. The director greeted everyone as they came in, making sure they signed in
(participants were "on the clock" for the day) and handing them a shiny new
mug with the organization logo and a gold pen to add their name to their mug.

Because of the layout of the facility, lunch was in a separate room, and the
caterers produced a buffet table of nourishing and great-tasting food--and one
of the most beautiful buffet tables I have ever seen.

Now if you work in a corporate environment and often meet in good hotels,
this may not seem extraordinary, but this was a public agency with a limited
budget, and about half the participants were facilities and parks maintenance
people, and this was not their average work day.

The care and thoughtfulness of these logistical arrangements really did
underline the message that was spoken--"We value you, and we want to know what you
think about the business of this organization."

Joelle
