Open Spacers:

Below is the text of an invitation to an event (fourth annual Winter
Retreat) to which all of you are invited. In the past when we have done
this event, some people have misunderstood our intentions. If the
invitation is unclear, please contact me. Thanks.

If you want the actual invitation with all the cool graphics and formatting,
send me a private e-mail.

I hope you can make it!

Our 4th Annual Open Space

WINTER RETREAT in the Poconos:

³Everything Is Still Moving²

February 20-22, 2004, Kirkridge Retreat Center, Bangor, Pa. USA

This is the weekend we gather to

Hang out

Cozy up to a fire

Take it easy

Get real

Celebrate

Chill

Get OUT of the chill

Tell a story

Check in

Gather energy

Schmooze

Make BIG plans (or not)

Ponder insights

HOLD on

Let GO

Relax

These are our purposes. The outcomes we get are completely up to us. You
can be sure the right people will show up to make it all possible.

This is open space, and we want you to be there, at the Kirkridge Center
near Stroudsburg, PA. Kirkridge is a magnificent hilltop retreat facility
known far and wide as a comfortable, year-round setting for gatherings and
special events. Located in the eastern Poconos of Pennsylvania, USA, it¹s
perched atop the Appalachian ridge and is close to a variety of attractions.

HERE IS what WINTER RETREAT is all about:

We gather Friday evening, 2/20, for dinner, introductions, and some time to
warm off the winter¹s chill. Saturday morning we'll ³open space² to name the
conversations we¹d like to have, the games we¹d like to play, and the ideas
we¹d like to kick around. See what¹s on everybody¹s mind, including your
own. Or don¹t mind any of it and just enjoy the mountain and the 270-degree
view. There are no rules. We continue in the open space until Sunday
afternoon, when we close and say good-bye about 4:00 p.m.

If the 4th annual Retreat is anything like the first three (and there¹s
absolutely no guarantee it will be), we¹ll tickle and prod the unfolding
issues and opportunities in our lives. We¹ll nose through life¹s vagaries
and vicissitudes, contemplate its lessons, draw some deep breaths around the
blessings we¹ve had, lick a wound or two, laugh a lot, do some dancing, pass
around a few poems, and generally kick back in a thoughtful, spirited kind
of way.

You may come to raise a question, learn from others¹ questions, tell a joke
or two, or build a snow man or woman that overlooks the valley. About forty
of the best hearts and minds in the East (and elsewhere) together in
relaxation, exploration, and very likely some high play will gather. Come
alone or bring friends and partners.

How will this end up? Nobody knows. We¹re not after ³results², so no one
can say. With a group as diverse as we will undoubtedly be, it would be
fruitless to predict any kind of outcomes. In Open Space we forego all the
traditional meeting and retreat structures and employ a few simple
guidelines that enable each of us and all of us to navigate in any direction
that pleases, teaches, or amuses us. To paraphrase one of last year¹s
participants, this is a weekend of ultimate sanity.

So, retreat to soothing surroundings, relax with good people, and set your
mind free. We plan no speakers, presenters, panelists or moderators. The
weekend will be a self-organizing, level playing field on which we make room
for all our interests, inquiries, and inklings. You may learn a great deal.
You may come away with plans, answers, or new questions, or you may simply
take away memories and smiles. You will very likely make new friends. (If
you've never been in this kind of meeting, you're in for a treat.)

Who will be there? This weekend is for anybody. Authors, musicians, poets,
designers, owners, loaners, students, and teachers. But if none of these
show up, we¹ll probably have joggers, jugglers, walkers, talkers, talking
walkers, readers, fire makers, storytellers, singers, and listeners, too.
Of course, we¹ll have our share of experts and amateurs, gazers and dazers,
movers and shakers, hummers and drummers, and no telling who else.

Ralph Copleman, an Open Space facilitator of long experience, will show us
how to ³self-organize² the weekend. We¹ll fashion a diverse and
comprehensive ³agenda² and gently move our way through it all day Saturday
and Sunday morning, stopping long enough on Saturday night for some optional
dancing and associated high jinks. Sunday we¹ll complete our agenda, and
take a good look around. We¹ll close with some parting words and smiles,
and maybe a hug or two. Ralph guarantees that you will be able to spend the
time exactly as you want.

Who¹s behind this? All of the following have had a hand in keeping this
going year to year and assembling the invitation list.

                  Orrin Judd Janet Castellini

                  Joan Kuyper Pamela Tudor

                  Jay Chaskes J.J. Nuttall

                  Diana Ramsey Corky Potter

                  Loretta Raider Paula Toynton

                  Andy Smith Philbert Smith

If you have questions, contact Ralph Copleman, 609-895-1629;
(rcopleman at comcast.net <mailto:ralph at earthdreams.net> ).

Why are we doing this? It¹s very simple and comes down to this: we¹ve done
it each of the three previous years and had so much fun we just HAD to do it
again. (Honestly, that¹s the whole reason.)

To sign up for Winter Retreat Œ04:

1. SEND A CHECK for $185 (same as last year) made out to ³Ralph
Copleman², 44 Titus Avenue, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648. This covers two
nights and six meals beginning with Friday¹s dinner. Accommodations are two
to a room, shared lavatories and handicapped accessible. All facilities are
non-smoking. All but $35 is refundable up to two weeks in advance. Not
planning to stay at Kirkridge? Then send a check for $56.00 (per person)
for meals only.

2. MARK YOUR CALENDAR for the ³Winter Retreat² of Friday evening,
February 20, through Sunday, February 22.

3. Watch your e-mail or regular mail (later) for driving directions and
other details. Watch your e-mail or mail (also later) for a list of
participants in case you want to select your roommate ahead of time.
Otherwise, they¹ll be assigned.

4. SEND A RETURN E-MAIL saying you're coming: rcopleman at comcast.net

5. Tell us who else you¹d like us to invite (send their e-mail addresses).

6. E-MAIL ANY QUESTIONS to Ralph Copleman, or phone: 609-895-1629.

How to Prepare for this event: Travel safely to Kirkridge and every other
place between now and then.

Hoping to be with you,

Ralph Copleman

(and all the other co-sponsors)

P.S. Winter Retreat '04 comes together simply for those who choose to
participate. There is no formal group or corporate entity behind it, and no
one makes a financial profit.

P.P.S. We collect no taxes on the many unusual kinds of profit that tend to
arise during the Retreat weekend.

            I Wonder

I Wonder What Would Happen If I Always:

Appreciated life
Beamed brightly
Chose courage
Did daring deeds
Expressed my love
Felt compassion
Gave freely
Healed completely
Inspired hope
Kindled friendships
Let go
Meditated calmly
Navigated wisely
Opened space
Passed over the past
Quit worrying
Released creativity
Soared higher
Thought great thoughts
Understood everything
Visioned recklessly
Wondered why
X-ed the to-do list
Yearned for peace
Zigzagged on a scooter
