from OS Institute (US) board

I'm with Chris on the subject of designating OS practitioners as Masters. It
seems to me that integrity and rapport are more important in the choice of a
facilitator for a particular project than number of meetings previously
facilitated. Plus, you set yourself up for the old question of whether
someone has had 100 experiences or the same experiences 100 times.

I like Michael P's method of making information about experience available
to clients who want it, and that is something any practitioner can do. I
don't see it as something that should be the responsibility of OSI.

My two cents' worth--

Joelle

Hmmmm . . .

Putting on my "client" hat -- I find the quantitative reference
to experience a useful tool in convincing myself and my
non-OS colleagues that the "facilitator" has the depth of
experience to cover whatever great mysteries and surprises
in process and outcome may occur. I call it "grounding" in
my own jargon.

I am attempting to use OS to penetrate deeply into corporate
and large-scale governmental operations. That does seem to
require a certain paying attention to the conventions and
communications protocols (and languaging) of those types
of organizations --- including quantitative references.

Also, in such work, a database of practitioners, event archive,
and forthcoming events -- would be helpful.

Hello, all -

I am talking with a potential client interested in an Open Space for a
gathering of people in education and business sectors interested in
education reform. The education people serve youth aged 5 to 16 years and
include everyone from counselors to state education office representatives
to school principals. The business participants will probably want to know
how they can help. The theme may be something like - what is needed / how
to implement / let's get it going for a certain model of education reform
resulting in actions at all levels of the educational system.

They would like to hear how Open Space was used in bringing up ideas and
actions around education reform with these sorts of participants.

Thank you in advance for your sharing of experiences and insights,

Lisa

Another thing to add -
This potential client was saying that it's hard to get Asian, island people
(her own culture) to step forward and take action, because the usual mode is
to wait for someone else to do it. We all know that Open Space changes the
mode of waiting to one of doing and that it works across and within
cultures.
(and, I did ask her/them if it is they who want these folks to act, and if
the folks themselves do not see a need to act...what are they pushing here?
Rather than lingering on a cultural impression of how a group of people act
/ or don't, I recommended they think instead of who the action people are
and invite a smaller group of people who already know and see that action is
what they want...but meanwhile....)
So far, one of these two clients are thinking v-e-r-y literally - for
example, they hear and don't hear the stories I tell them of parallel
situations (Open Space with education and business, Open Space stirring
people into personal and organizational action), and because she did not see
the openspaceworld.org What is Open Space article translated into an Asian
language, she is not hearing that I have colleagues who are part of and who
work with people of Asian countries and cultures specifically (hi, Laura,
Jimbo, Gail and my other brothers and sisters in your beautiful
countries...)
And yet, and yet, she is very excited about Open Space. So she jumped from
some linear brain cell into an intuitive one for *that* understanding..
So, gee: if you have any
education-and-business-for-education-reform-issues-into-action-with-Asian-pa
rticipants stories, maybe she'll be able to relate to that.
Thanks again,

Lisa
