what folks can do

I am interested in the number of emails I have read from people
outside of the United States which clearly hold the viewpoint that
Americans are isolated in their understanding of the world, naive or
superficial in their focus. In addition, covering the range from
compassion (the wonderful outpouring of sympathy and offers of
support from so many countries) to hate (Saddam hussein saying it was
good that this happened because it gives Americans the chance to
experience what others experience daily), there seems to be an
underlying sense that this experience provides an opportunity for
Americans (as opposed to America) to come out and join the rest of
the world, perhaps even identify with it. These seem like important
voices for Americans to hear. Especially because, naive or not, our
country has such a tremendous influence worldwide. -- Kenoli
