Tami,

Yep, I think we all have had and may still have the control fears around Chaos that might happen if we are not in full control. I described open space to one of my colleagues who leads large conferences as a “trust fall”.  However over the past 5-8 years he continues to hold space for big groups and it all goes forward well.  He has learned how to setup the simple rules of Open Space and stand back and let the magic happen.  He was able to take those steps by experience the process and then build confidence working with larger and larger groups.

For you to learn I’d like to invite you to experience open space for yourself.  In my mind it sort of does not matter what the topic is just that you find an open space that is simply run as designed.  If you have time this weekend, taking some time to join d&d open space out of the UK would give you some of the experiential learning you will need to take the “trust fall”.

To be honest, I love the idea of getting individuals together in a group to bring forth ideas and work on problem solving. However, I am a little terrified of the no time-aligned agenda and the fact that the problems to be discussed are all generated from the participants. If you remember Dory in Nemo who kept getting lost I feel that could happen in these events, but I will "just keep swimming" and learn more and hope to utilize this in my career with our key stakeholders.

I would be especially be interested in talking to someone who works in poverty alleviation and diversion. Please respond if you would be willing to help this lost fish to learn about Open Space.
