Heated and fascinating conversation for sure!

PRO certification.
I want to have a system of referrals that tells me that doctor
such-and-such, whom I never met, can be trusted with her skills. the fact
that she has MD in front of her name tells me she went to attend a medical
doctor degree, has years of studies under her belt, and can prescribe me
pills. I would prefer her advice than that of a "google parent". of course.

AGAINST certification.
In many realms that are more akin to craftsmanship than to a physics
degree, each and every certification I can recall has gone through the
process of being gamed, diluted in its content, and transformed into a
ponzi scheme of sorts.

And again, it depends on contexts and fields of work. MSc's PHD's, MDs tell
me something important that I tend to trust most of the times. I have never
check a plumber's CV or certificates. Word of mouth and my brother's
recommending him performs that exact same function.

What parts of our work are more akin to a PhD researcher? What part of our
work are more akin to that of an artisan? (by the way I deeply value
academia)
