Anne Stadler I did an Open Space years ago with a buddhist community near
San Diego, California. We had about 120 people of all ages, from 8 to 80's.
The primary form of seating were floor pillows. For the elderly, we had a
handful of chairs that moved with them, carried by the young people to
breakout spaces as needed. In the circle, the chairs started in a back row
on the first morning. By the end of the second day, they were intermingled
with the cushions.
The other fun thing that happened was that an alter, which started outside
the circle, was also integrated into the circle by the end of the gathering.

Dear Pablo
I think that what is really necessary is the circles not the chairs, two
different things...of course people get tired if they cant sit for a certain
time...but yes it is possible to be creative, it depends where it does take
place... and how long it is.
I think thato if some chair are available but nor for everybody they shuld
be shared in a rotative way...
Eleder Bum sended me information about how bad for our health it is to be
sitting for so many hours...I think he has experience doing some OS without
chairs

Just for the record... when Michael Pannwitz and I hosted 2108 German
Psychiatrist in a circus tent there wasnt a chair in sight. We used the
little cushions that you find at sports events. Seemed to work, and when the
breakout groups formed everybody just carried their cushion.

Subject: [OSList] Do we really need chairs in Open Space?
Dearest OS community,
I have been asked to co-host an Open Space next week where Chilean civil
society and NGOs will propose ideas to enrich the political programs for the
upcoming elections.
An unknown number of people could come. Organizers estimate around
300-500.
The venue is big enough.
The umbrella question is being destiled and refined.
In the organizing committee there is an argument about the convenience of
using chairs.
Some people feel attached to the almost untouchable sacred geometry of the
circle of chairs.
I personally believe that chairs are not an essential element of OST, while
people can self-organize and decide if they prefer to talk standing up, sit
on the ground...or even talk while talking.
That is why I take the courage to ask for help to the collective wisdom
present in this OS community.
What successful stories can you share of opening space without chairs?
What are the pros and cons of not using chairs in an Open Space?
In what ways can (un)availability of chairs be a barrier or opportunity to
unleash collective wisdom through self organization?
