[OSList] McKinsey Quarterly, May 2012 - an opportunity for OST?

Hi all:

Now on a completely
different matter - or not…

There are a
lot of changes happening in the last 20 years in the world - like peak oil and
the need for the transition for a more sustainable and resilient community-centered
way of life - changes in the way people worldwide think about politics and economy
- the occupy movement and today’s demonstrations all over the world (http://map.squaresdatabase.org/) are cases that illustrate that.. 
OST or
OST-like ways of convening are being used almost everywhere or are part of the patterns
in use (for instance in the transition movement). 

But this
change is also active in the corporate world where new paradigms and ways of
thinking about leadership, innovation and even strategy are in good currency.

Al this came
from reading the McKinsey Quarterly, of May 2012 (summary and a link for the
complete PDF here: https://www.mckinseyquarterly.com/Strategy/Strategy_in_Practice/The_social_side_of_strategy_2965) on “The social side of Strategy”,
with a lot of examples of companies that used  “participatory methods of strategy development”
or “social strategy setting” using tools like wikis, forums, e-mail
distribution lists or internal collaborative platforms or tools.

Reading the
full article one can find a lot of clues and expressions that are similar to threads that have
been discussed in this list over the years. As always,
there are good news and bad news.

The good
news is that being McKinsey respected in the corporate world and being OST a
king of gathering where a lot of the values preached on the report naturally
happen, this report can be used as one way to approach corporate clients with OST
as a value proposition, when the venues can be located in one place (or
eventually two).

note to the coincidence with the launching of the French e-book: in the full PDF
version there is a sidebar signed by Olivier Sibony, director of McKinsey’s
Paris office… - to the attention of Christine Koehler ;-)
 
The bad news
is that, in the majority of the cases, we are talking about transnational
organizations, which, in part because of the need to cut travel expenses, but also to
enlarge the participation in time and space, use online platforms. Even if we
have the experience of this list (and in the past of the wiki at http://www.openspaceworld.org/cgi/netwiki.cgi) I don’t think that the
online OS platforms I have experienced are good enough for the job, and collectively
we have not enough experience on facilitating web based OST-like events. Maybe we should think about that...
