We usually divide the total cost of expenses like the venue, lunch and my
travel, lodging, and facilitator's fee by the expected number of attendees,
then add on 25% to that amount to give us "cushion". This is not a terribly
profitable model - often they only break even, and a few times it has
*not* paid
for the venue, or even my fees - but it seems to keep it low enough that
people don't mind paying.
Usually we end up with a small profit, which we donate to various worthy
causes. No one has ever complained about the cost, even without
"professional" instructors and such.

Chuni ? I think it depends totally on the client and the situation. When I
do something like an OSONOS I simply attempt to cover costs. Most recently
with the OSONOS by the Sea (well not that recently as that was 3 years ago)
the fee was $25. That paid for space and coffee/donuts. A local church
provided the space, and all meals and accommodations were handled by the
individual participants. Actually we ran a considerable surplus. So with the
surplus, I doubled the Church?s fee, as it was ridiculously low, and then
sent $500 to the Access Queen. However if we were talking about a major
corporation holding a serious working conference (2 ? days) on a critical
issue the money can and (I think) should be equally serious. Of course it is
all coming out of a common corporate pot, but in a recent case I think it
probably came out to $1500-2000 per participant. For whatever it is worth,
I?ve never had an argument with anybody in terms of the value received. For
the corporation the tab was probably close to $450,000, but considering what
they achieved, and compared to how much it could have cost had they done it
any other way (traditional committees over a year or two) ? that price was
bargain basement LOW.

Hi everyone,
Yes Gail we had a grand time in creating this collective book on Open
Space.?On the fundamentals of Open Space, we were on the same wave length.
This is not surprising since Open Space mimics a natural process that is
engrained in all of us and that becomes visible if we find the conditions to
let it surface.
The gift of this project was Harrison Owen joining in with a solid preface
to the book and with his generous words in the video about the book and the
project. More people are likely to pay more attention because of that. The
group of co-writers has already thanked you for this and I thank you again
personally.?
We did exchange ideas on each other's articles and that was really on
relatively minor aspects, preferences, perspectives on how to, etc.
...and?finding words that can convey the same meaning (or close to the same
meaning) in different countries or even regions since as we all know
that?language evolves differently in different places through time and life
circumstances and with the influence of the environments.?
The challenge was as Suzanne mentioned, connecting across time zones,
technology to do it, access to that technology, busy schedules and dealing
with various events of other projects that got in the way of the calendar.
That is small potatoes when we consider the friendships we created or
solidified and the fun and laughter it brought us.?
The response from readers is already very encouraging.?

No courage needed, Raffi, and thanks for asking. And as usual my good friend
Florian has beaten me to the draw (now there is an Americanism from the Wild
West!). And. my meaning is actually very simple. As you know I think (along
with a whole mess of other folks) that self organization is a fundamental
process in the cosmos, affecting everything, everybody, and all systems from
the beginning - 13.7 billion years ago. It is what we are and what we do --
and we have been doing it as a species for a long time, and as individuals,
for all of our lives. All that happens in Open Space is that we invite that
age old process to begin, or begin again if it has gotten stalled for
whatever reason. There is nothing to learn, we just have to remember what we
already are. It is built in, hardwired in each and every one of us. Which
means there really isn't anything for us to do (in terms of the process) .
it happens all by itself. I suppose it is a small play on words, but
actually the process does us - as has been the case for some time. Doubtless
from the beginning of time. I think.

Chuni ? I think it depends totally on the client and the situation. When I
do something like an OSONOS I simply attempt to cover costs. Most recently
with the OSONOS by the Sea (well not that recently as that was 3 years ago)
the fee was $25. That paid for space and coffee/donuts. A local church
provided the space, and all meals and accommodations were handled by the
individual participants. Actually we ran a considerable surplus. So with the
surplus, I doubled the Church?s fee, as it was ridiculously low, and then
sent $500 to the Access Queen. However if we were talking about a major
corporation holding a serious working conference (2 ? days) on a critical
issue the money can and (I think) should be equally serious. Of course it is
all coming out of a common corporate pot, but in a recent case I think it
probably came out to $1500-2000 per participant. For whatever it is worth,
I?ve never had an argument with anybody in terms of the value
received. For the corporation the tab was probably close to $450,000, but
considering what they achieved, and compared to how much it could have cost
had they done it any other way (traditional committees over a year or two) ?
that price was bargain basement LOW.

Chuni, I might add ? that in talking with the client I find that the
following questions can be helpful.
1) How much is it worth to you to achieve the goal you have indicated
(whatever that might have been)?
2) How much would it cost to achieve that goal using any other approach you
can think of (just to create perspective)?
Of course if they don?t think it is worth anything there might be some
question as to Why bother? Or if they can think of a more economical way to
achieve their intentions ? Go for it!
