Here we go again! New phone?!
As I was saying Raffi, you have opened a wonderful thread of conversation.
Last week I met some colleagues from Canada having decided it was time to
invest a bit of marketing money to follow the passion in my soul which is to
Open Space in places that are more challenging i.e. traditional
organizations (and who knows perhaps even Boards).
My 3 colleagues had interesting perspectives not too different from what you
described Raffi. All had participated in OS.
One noted that it will be difficult to be paid what this is worth. While the
real value of self-organizing and shared leadership is high the "perceived"
value of under the radar pre-work, invisible holding of space and lots of
homemade stuff makes it challenging.
Another said that the messiness at the beginning makes it look
unprofessional and disorganized also making it harder to be paid.
And then finally the third person said that the fact that it was not perfect
is what gave her the courage to jump right in, create topics and engage
fully throwing caution to the wind.
Somehow I felt very invigorated by these candid perspectives knowing that I
will need to find my way and figure this out which is to be where people are
and meet them there, inviting them to this experience of Open Space that
cannot be understood in the ways we understand other things with our head.
OS touches us intuitively in a common sense way activating the feeling side
which then battles with our head until the head gets it...ah bliss!
Like you Raffi, it is unlikely that I will mess with what works in the
vibrancy of the chaos but I feel I am listening and am a bit better at
sitting in it for awhile accepting that perceived value and real value take
time.
Thx for inspiring me to share hoping others weigh in on the conversation.
