Raffi, this thread is travelling to so many wonderful places. This week I
had a very similar conversation with three people sharing their unique
perspectives of their experiences as participants in

Subject: creating the Community Bulletin Board

Dear friends and colleagues,

I've been following the Youth Leaders thread with interest and what you
wrote, Harrison, really resonated with me. It was an important reminder.
Behind your words I hear the question, "What value has any board every
offered to an organization?" Perhaps "board" and "boredom" have the same
wroot??? <toothy grin>

Really, however, I've been meaning for some time to post about something
else.

I'm curious what y'alls (American slang for "all of you") practice of giving
the instructions/invitation for creating the Community Bulletin Board during
the formal opening of the space looks like.

Here's a little context:

Speaking with a friend and participant from a recent local OST event I'd
facilitated- a Compassionate Communication (NVC/Nonviolent Commmunication)
practice day- I got the feedback that all the chaos during the creation of
the Community Bulletin Board was too much, it just *wasn't* *harmonious*. It
really challenged the sense of order and beauty that she thrives on in
everyday life. It took me some time to understand what she was talking
about. And after I understood her, I told her it was unlikely I would work
any differently based on what she said because I found that chaos in the
beginning as a natural part. I did promise to post this question. Perhaps
I'm missing something?

The "chaos" I've seen in the beginning as the agenda is being created
includes:

- side conversations
- people announcing topics and people writing down topics at the same time
(some people are doing something else while important information is being
imparted)

- some people posting topics but not announcing them (clear directions have
been given several times during the opening; I tend not insist nor remind
people to announce them assuming they heard those directions several times)

- a person requesting that we go around the circle and introduce ourselves
(for a small group of 30 or 50) and no one really responding the request.

- people getting food

I think my friend would prefer that:

- people would first all write down their topics and then take turns
announcing them-- making sure that all topics get announced.

So, I'm curious what you do and perhaps there is some richness that is not
being invited that I'm not aware of??

Looking forward to hearing from y'alls!

appreciatively,

Raffi
