urgent: support our haitian friends and colleagues

hi all,

some years ago, john engle and some others went to haiti and started opening
space. i remember fremy cesar and some others from haiti coming to osonos,
as far back as vancouver, in 2000. this afternoon, i see the reports of the
devasting earthquake(s) in haiti today and i think they're gonna need a lot
more open space -- for education and development, rebuilding and recovery.

i've always wanted to see this community fund important projects directly,
meaning that givers from around this vast international community of ours
would be able to fund really good work by direct request and donation. i've
envisioned a sort of open space (market) for good project requests and
personal/professional philanthropic giving/support.

so i'm making the request and pointing out that john and fremy and others
have been doing really good work for many years. and now, with the
earthquake(s), their project just got a whole lot bigger and more
important. luckily, they've already had in place a way to catch whatever
funding we can send them... http://www.haitipartners.org/?page_id=552.

so, if you're reading this message and watching the news from the comfort of
a home that didn't get shaken to the ground today, please consider joining
this experiment in direct philanthropy. i've already been to the site and i
know the donation button works.

we all see a lot of stuff happening in the world and don't have much of a
way to make or support a difference. this is NOT one of those times. if
want to do something to help in haiti, here is the direct link to the button
to help open more space there... http://www.haitipartners.org/?page_id=552.

then send friends and colleagues there. post it on facebook. blogs.
wherever. we know people who have made a real difference, already, in
haiti.

i should add that i've not talked with john or anyone else about this. i
just heard the news and know the quality of what they've been doing down
there all these years. i thought that should be remembered and rewarded at
this time of need.

we as a community have a little bit of money socked away in various osi bank
accounts around the world, but we have a tremendous wealth of resources
stacked up in our own personal and business accounts, even in the midst of
recessions and such -- still plenty of discretionary resources out there.

that's the deeper pocket i hope we can reach into for our haitian friends.
perhaps this can then be a model for other important open space projects and
good work that needs some financial backing -- but we won't require an
earthquake to welcome the request and share our resources.

with best wishes for our old friends in haiti, and all the old friends there
we haven't met yet,

(i'm sure this could have been shorter, but sometimes passion is like that.)

please join us, with whatever you can...
