SV: [OSLIST] WOSONOS 2009 and Then.......

sheila isakson and i hosted osonos7 in chicago. our main model for that was
osonos4, hosted by harrison. and my counsel to every host-to-be i've talked
with since then is, first and foremost, to remember that this is open space
we're talking about, so keep looking for things to not do.

we booked a single meeting room, where free coffee was available in an
adjoining room, plenty of public space nearby for breakouts to spill into,
lots of restaurants in the immediate vicinity, close to downtown sightseeing
places, and moderately-priced hotel rooms on site. (a hampton inn in
downtown chicago). we pointed invitees to a budget hostel option a few
blocks away as a cheaper sleeping place. after that, it was nothing but
markers, postits, paper, bells, and computers. simply open space. sliding
scale, same as harrison, i think, $25 to $200. we lined up a few plates of
hors d'ouvres for the evening before, which was simple hanging out, watching
people trickle in from the airports, tipping a few drinks from the hotel
bar, and saying hellos. i don't remember that the total prep took more than
a day or two, spread over several months.

i've always thought that part of the job of hosting osonos was to make it
look just that easy, the way harrison did at osonos4, to show (especially
for new practitioners) just how simple it was to run a big deal in a little
bit of open space. a simple invitation: a single meeting room. some basic
supplies. and an opening briefing. everything else is strictly optional,
and less is still more.

there is the bit about registrations and such, but i always thought that was
just a lot of chatting with friends from all over, and keeping a simple list
of who said they were coming. hosting was great fun. and great learning.
i'd recommend it to anyone.

i know there's a certain charge out of naming one "world" osonos each year,
but i do wish we as a community made it easier for more than one of these to
happen at once. i've always wanted to see simultaneous events on several
continents. i wish we could have less emphasis on making a show of this
place or that place (and choosing only one of them) and more emphasis on who
(even if it's many people) is interested in stepping into the simplest
responsibilities of hosting and opening. and then if we have many hosts,
they can work together on sharing marketplace wall postings and how to post
all the notes into teh same online place. i think with skype and other tech
we'd now have easy ways to have video of world-around breakout sessions,
where small groups on several continents could be meeting face-to-face in
single sessions. i suppose this strains the traditions a bit, but i think
it'd be worth trying, as further experiment and demonstration of what's now
possible in an increasingly open space world.
