Hi John and other networkers,
I set up 4 Ning communities and I have very good experiences with Ning. One
is for the Dutch Open Space community, see www.openspacenl.ning.com You can
customize the look and feel, chose to ban the adds (if you want to pay for
it). However, please consider that only 10% of the visitors of community
sites (in Europe) tend to be "creators", who actually contribute with items
in discussions and information. An interesting analysis described in the
article "How Europeans are adopting social technology", see

opean_Social_Technographics_Revealed_.pdf
You need some key members to initiate ongoing interaction.
What I like about Ning is the huge amount of photo, video and audio files
you are allowed to upload. And it is very easy to invite members and sent
messages to all members. I am using Ning also to write a book together with
two colleagues. A shortcoming is that it is not so easy to share a list of
word or pdf files, you have to attach them to a discussion item or you can
use the application box.net (up to 1 G of free web space; I use it as back
up for my very important files too) on your personal page. Ning is working
on an application for easy file sharing, to be released in February I think.
I am quite pleased with Ning, I have tried some other software before, for
me this is the best so far.
Good luck,
Tonnie

Thank you Danilo for your quick response.
I've set up Ning for two different networks I'm involved with. So far
it doesn't seem to be the ideal for us. But perhaps I could do better
at customizing it to our specific needs. I've also heard comments from
others that they're not so wild about it. How about on this list, are
people using Ning to make it possible for groups to start
communicating before conferences? If so, have you been pleased or not?
Perhaps I need to do more experimenting with facebook and linked in
for this specific need.
Thanks again, Danilo.
