Hunger

Dear all,

I have been following this OS-list for a while now and have been struck by
your common believe in OS and its underlying principles, your wide
experience and willingness to share it, the positive intentions and the
warmness of the interaction. Until now I have been a 'passive participant'
to the list. With the discussion on hunger, I can no longer resist to share
my thoughts.

First a short introduction of myself: I live in the Netherlands and work as
a 'behavioral change architect'. I am working from the believe that lasting
change requires behavioural change and that chances on lasting behavioral
change can be significantly increased:

. If the goal of the change initiative is translated into a
practical behavioral level: who should be doing what to realize .. So this
includes getting clearity about responsibilities.

. If this is done by / with the ones that have an important role in
putting this behavior into practice: the ones that should execute the
behavior, the ones responsible for the execution, the ones with required
expertise, etc.

. If you provide a structure/process that ensures lasting focus on
the subject, but does not have a 'personal stake' to defend.

It cannot be a surprise then that I am interested in any (small or large
scale) interventions (like OS), that can help in this.

Back to world hunger from the perspective of a behavioral change architect:

. Opening space without anyone experiencing hunger participating,
seems useless. Only somebody hungry can describe what he (thinks he) needs
to get out of hunger.

. All good intentions / ideas and initiatives from the outside
(people not hungry) can be helpful, but will only have a chance on lasting
success if they are based on a true understanding of the one(s) with hunger
and are executed by / from the perspective of the hungry.

. So what is the key to solve hunger? Is it money? I don't think so.
I would guess there are enough people able to share some of their own wealth
to provide the money required to save another world citizen from hunger. I
would be very happy if I could do just that: helping just one single
man/woman/child out of hunger. Whether it is by money of anything else.

. Problem is: I do not know what kind of help this man needs and
unfortunately I am not in any direct contact with the one hungry to ask /
discuss (in true, respectful dialogue) how I can help.

. Translate this to the bigger scale and I guess Opening space in
some way could help in getting the required interaction going. I am not yet
clear in what way. Opening space via internet will probably not do the
trick.

So my question to all OS-specialists out there: how can we open space
between the hungry and the ones willing and capable of helping?

If we do not succeed in getting that going, initiatives will stick to the
category of 'fundraisers'.

Very much interested in your further thoughts!

Kind regards, Rob
