Self-organizing universe and tatsers

Hi all – I have been following the postings about short os events with interest. There has been a great range offered to think on. I love the idea of offering the opening only as a taster.

Each year I have a group of students twice a year, at the beginning of the year for a day and for 3½ hours at the end of the year. The topic is arguable one of New Zealand’s most contentious – The Treaty of Waitangi – and the first day is about engaging with the realities of TToW in our past, present and future – context, consequences, attitudes and responses. At the end of the year, I facilitate open space technology events entitled ‘The Teacher and Te Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi Now.’ We start at 9.00am the first of three, 45 min sessions is a 9.30am, and closing is at 12.00noon. I like 3 sessions, because it gives people the chance to ‘butterfly’ have morning tea for a session and still catch 2 sessions.

I am constantly amazed at how they just go to it when I shut my mouth, at about 9.15. Three and a half hours is rather compressed, but there is always a level of wonder at the end, at what and how deeply they have discussed. The personal insights are palpable even if not spoken in the closing session. There is a new, highly charged calm by the end. The information session at the beginning of the year is one of keys, because everyone has at least a foundation in common. The issue is definitely contentious – every has an opinion – and I don’t think the intervening months of cogitation can be underestimated either.

Regards

Anne

Hi, Michele -

=20

Thank you for your interest in the Open Space trainings - I looked on =
the UK
website=20

http://www.openspaceuk.com/index.php/practictioners

=20

...where I did not see anything listed for 'events' but I wanted to =
refer
you to practitioners there - perhaps you can ask some of them if they =
have
any trainings coming up.

=20

It turns out that a lot of facilitators (of any method, much less Open
Space) do not do trainings - such different skill-sets.

=20

I know several of those colleagues but I don't know if any of them give
workshops.

=20

But there are periodically trainings in France, Berlin, and Scandinavia, =
as
you may know from the OSLIST. I don't know if that sort of travel would =
be
accessible for you.

=20

I'm actually coming to London in April to do some Open Space - but it's =
not
a training - it's an interactive plenary session in a conference for =
meeting
planners.

=20

I do give trainings in various parts of the world wherever and whenever =
I am
hosted - so if you are part of a collaboration, university or other =
entity
with capacity to bring me over, we can certainly talk about that. But =
I'm
hoping that in the community of practitioners above you may find =
something
more accessible in your own region and just be able to come there to =
learn
and share experience and knowledge.

=20

And - who knows - if it works for you to join us in July this year in =
San
Francisco (let's hear it for airplane ticket money falling from the sky =
into
your well-deserving hands) you could join us for the Open Space Learning
Workshop just before the World Open Space on Open Space.

=20

Whenever I am the host of a workshop, everyone can pay whatever they can
afford - so if by chance you find the travel money, you can pay whatever =
you
can afford over that for the registration. And there is a very low-cost
hostel just up the hill from our San Francisco workshop. So keep that in
mind should the travel-to-the-USA situation present itself.

=20

I never know what the year will bring - so who knows if my travels and
trainings will take me back to the UK. What I'll do is keep you on a =
little
mailing list I have (sporadic - maybe a couple of times a year) that is =
just
for Open Space workshops - so you'll know when they are for future, just =
in
case.=20

=20

It would be a pleasure to learn with and from you in future.

=20

Take care, and keep in touch,

=20

Lisa

Okay so that last item was a message I meant to send to Michele but I say hi
to you all!

I'm hoping that our esteemed colleagues in the UK may know of an upcoming
training for fabulous Michele...

Cheers from rainy - no, sunny - no, hailing - no windy ... Berkeley,
California...

Yay, Holger - I foresee a lovely little gathering of fun facilitators at
the IAF/NA conference ! Warm wishes for a wonderful workshop - I look
forward to seeing you in Atlanta.

And: congratulations on hosting another great workshop in Boston. You will
have a busy April. I know what rich learning you will be bringing to the
folks who take your workshops - they are lucky to have you as a teacher.

Travel safely, and see you in a few months,
Lisa
