Satyagraha

My wife and I had the extreme pleasure of a weekend in New York filled with
Phelim and his marvelous opera. On Sunday Phelim and his Lady Love, Matilda
(yes Open Space worked -- or at least Cupid showed up!) joined us for
dinner. Three hours of pure delight. And then on Monday, it was opera time.
The papers had been full of it including a feature story and long review in
the Times. So we had the opinion of others, but nothing could have prepared
me for the total experience. I knew it would be good, but frankly I had no
idea just HOW good!

As I was sitting waiting for the opening curtain I read the Director's Notes
(that would be Phelim) in the Play Bill. Some of it was pretty much what you
would expect -- thanks to various parties etc. But one line jumped out at
me. Phelim credited Open Space! I can't imagine what others in the audience
might have understood by "Open Space," but it just blew me away. And then it
all started! WOW!

Phelim had warned me that there was an Open Space moment, and it was there,
but that was just the beginning. As I wrote Phelim -- "And I must take a
small point of issue with you. You indicated that there was an “open space
moment.” I got it, and it was there – but I think you are wrong, or maybe
under stating. Or something!

Truthfully, the whole production was the opening of space. Physical space,
consciousness space, historical space, human space, and some other sorts of
spaces I can’t name. I am not suggesting for a moment that OST was the
inspiration for it all – but it might be a useful mode of interpretation.
What struck me was the way everything flowed in a non-linear but ever
expanding circular motion. Just the way an Open Space moves. But the secret
is not the mysteries of OST, but the infinitely deeper ways in which human
consciousness explores (possibility) space and then self organizes to create
higher levels of complex order – only to be broken and renewed again at
higher levels of complexity and elegance. Breathe taking! And my
compliments to the High Flyer, Matilda! With minimal presence, but maximal
impact – she flew for all of us!"

Thank you Phelim!

Check out Phelim talking about his production of Phillip Glass's Satyagraha
at the Metropolitan Opera: the video clip is now on the front page of
www.nytimes.com.

Congrats, Phelim.
