Open Space 2.0 - Beyond the Dogma

Sounds like a marvelous under taking, but I am not sure about all this
“Dogma” business. Dogma in my lexicon is a whole bunch of stuff that you
have to do/believe. My experience with OST is that it is all about thinking
of one more thing NOT to do – or believe. The end of the line, or indeed the
next iteration, would involve doing nothing at all, and where “belief”
translated into pure experience. You were just “there” in that present
moment being fully what you (we) already were – full, conscious, passionate,
responsible human beings. My experience with most of the 2nd Generation Open
Spaces is that they seem to involve more and different doing and believing.
To my eyes this seems to be going in the wrong direction. But what do I
know? Have fun!!

Subject: Open Space 2.0 – Beyond the Dogma

Dear Harrison, Open Space elders, existing and aspiring members of the Open
Space establishment, heretics, old hands, young bucks, novices, wannabies,
lurkers and anyone else who might be reading this:

Paul Levy (www.cats3000.net/paullevy.html) and Jack Martin Leith
(www.jackmartinleith.com/?page_id=134) warmly invite you to join us in a
two-hour exploration of the following proposition:

The principles and practices of Open Space Technology have changed very
little since its inception in 1985. And those who dare to challenge its
orthodoxies tend to be viewed as heretics by the Open Space establishment.

Meanwhile, the Internet has transformed the way people work. Web 1.0 has
morphed into Web 2.0 ( <http://barcamp.org/> http://barcamp.org). Techies
have fused Web 2.0 tools with a sanitised version of Open Space to create an
increasingly popular event format called BarCamp ( <http://barcamp.org/>
http://barcamp.org). And even the old-school conference organisers have
woken up to the idea of "unconferences" (see
www.mimegasite.com/mimegasite/articles/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=10
03684628).

Has the time come to ditch the dogma ("Always do X." "Never do Y.") and
develop a new strain of Open Space that's better suited to the needs of
today's organisations and communities? If so, what might this new and
improved version ("Open Space 2.0") look like?

While honouring Harrison Owen and respecting the ground breaking work done
by other Open Space elders, participants in the two-hour workshop will
expose the dogma, create new possibilities and pave the way for the next
"release" of Open Space.

If you are unable to get to Brighton you can participate remotely through
Skype, and through this mailing list. And if you are new to the world of
Open Space, Paul and Jack will brief you on Open Space customs and practices
ahead of the event.
