Law of Two Feet--the rest of the story

Thanks, Diane, for your random comments.

I have done some gatekeeping when doing other kinds of facilitation, but not
in Open Space. I know there can be some inbalance when people from two very
different cultures come together, or where there is a large perceived
difference in power. I have not experienced the two-culture situation in Open Space,
but OST seems to work just fine with the power differential. Most groups in
Open Space do some gatekeeping within the group.

I think any of your guesses about the woman could be accurate--I'm inclined
toward the theory that she likes facilitated meetings (someone else will take
part of the responsibility). In a longer, offsite meeting, she would likely
have found someone to talk with in a butterfly mode.

Keeps life interesting. I have sometimes chatted on the sidelines with
someone who was shy about voicing her ideas. But I was not inclined to go and
fix it for her in the group.

Joelle
