Compelling video

VERY COOL!

Just what I've been looking for . . . Thank you for sending this Ralph.

The more I look around me, and the more Deb & I think about shopping for
Christmas for our young ones and each other . . . The more bothered I have
become with the amount of STUFF there (in the Mall - We went to the HUGE
Opry Mills Mall in Nashville last night - The MECCA for "Stuff Worshippers")

My mind has been churning and unsettled by the amount of stuff in our stores
manufactured in China - At first, I found myself thinking "Anti-Chinese
Manufactured" . . . and was extremely frustrated last night because 95% of
the stuff I picked up was "Made in China" . . . The remaining 5% was "Made
in Mexico" . . . What to do? Where do I find stuff made in the USA? Is
anything still made here?

This video brought some great clarity for me. It's not China's or Mexico's
"fault" . . . It's simply the path that humanity has traveled down . . . and
it IS linear in a finite world - No point in passing any judgment whatsoever
. . . It's just time to give this some REAL air, and I believe this video
clip is a darn good start.

The video is benign enough that it doesn't do the "slam it down your throat"
activist approach (which usually causes me to "turn off" and evade) . . . I
have not spent any time validating the statistics and/or information, but I
have no reason to believe it is not accurate. For sure, it is eye opening.

I have already started using the Eco-Light bulbs and am paying close
attention to my consumption habits - At least it's a start. I have a long
way to go - I know that I can use fewer "single-use containers" (Plastic
Cups) and insulate my house better and get a tankless water heating system
when my current water heater dies and drive less and buy less STUFF I don't
really need . . . etc etc etc

I will promote this video/effort within my personal sphere of influence
which is FULL of "professional grade shoppers/consumers" . . . My hope is
that even a small percentage of these folks will "Get it" and pass it on . .
. and we'll move full circle to appropriate behavioral change. I believe
that we (Consumers) can effect change powerfully simply by being more
cognizant of our shopping habits/choices. If we don't buy the stuff that is
a product of this earth destroying mechanism that humanity has been building
for the past 50+ years and begin paying more attention to "Home-grown" LOCAL
products, we ALL win :-)

Ralph Copleman, you have made my day . . . Thank you!

Some years back, at an OSonOS in Monterey, California, Becky Peterson
and I hatched a plan to do what we called "opening space for the
environment". The hatchling never amounted to much, though both of us
have moved on to other kinds of support for environmentalism and
sustainability.

In the spirit of that movement, I recommend the following 20-minute
video, viewable for free on the internet;

http://www.storyofstuff.com

(The Story of Stuff, produced and narrated by Annie Leonard). Please
watch it, and then think about how we can open more space for the
issues in question. Thanks.
