Tenneson -- As you probably know – my mantra has been (for ever) “Think of
one more thing NOT to do.” So I am definitely in the simplicity pot, as it
were. But when it comes to the “question” – by which I suppose you mean the
Theme, of course the Group decides. But when that decision is made may be
another question. If you are suggesting that the people make that decision
after they arrive – I am not sure that would work, for the simple reason
that I can’t imagine why they would bother to come in the first place. I
guess some people just go to meeting just to go to meetings. But I wouldn’t
be one of those people. Definitely one more thing not to do! On the other
hand when the theme is something that I care passionately about – believe me
I will be there.

Then we come to a real mystery! You said something about – “it would be fun
to set an open space format so that questions are named by the group. Then
even go to a WC format.”

I guess I am missing a whole bunch here – but WC in my lexicon means Water
Closet. That is what it says in all the pubs I frequent, at least those on
the other side of the pond (from me). And what a “WC format” might be has
definitely set my imagination loose in some directions I am not sure I
should be heading in. Help!

Hi Friends.

I find a similar process with OS and WC (and others). With each use, I look
for ways to make it more simple. I confess, I’m big on context and it takes
some effort for me to let go. With WC, I used to feel more strongly about
naming the story, the conditions, guidelines, posters, tables set, crisp
question, etc. Yet recently, I find myself almost just saying – “go” with a
challenge to think harvest while in it. OS has been like this for me also.

That isn’t to say that I don’t want to use all of the setup, but have just
learned that I can do it more simply, particularly when I have less time
with them. In all, for me it feels like my simple grounding in purpose and
presence decomplicate.

In the spirit of morphing and experimenting, it would be fun to set an open
space format so that questions are named by the group. Then even go to a WC
format.

A few thoughts to stir to the simplicity pot.

Dear Diane

This is just a small echo from the “other side” of your Switzerland
trainings – I have been a part of your World Café training and greatly
enjoyed getting to know you (and hearing your Canadian French!). I would
have loved to stay for the OS part, but just couldn’t. Thank you for having
come and made this learning possible! I hope you enjoyed your stay in our
country – and I admire you for taking enough time to combine it with
holidays, making the trip even more worth wile.

Does it only seem to me or is it so that World Café is more complicated in
terms of preparation than Open Space? Since I have been familiar with OST
for so long, I naturally tend to find everything else more complicated and
would like to have an objective view on this. Any experiences anybody?

Thank you - Catherine
