Chris--

I really like your approach of being more mindful about work-related
practices. I do a number of small things, like avoiding solvent-based marking pens,
encouraging clients to recycle paper from their office by re-using it in Open
Space. In Seattle, I've had box lunches provided by an organization that
prepares homeless people to work in the food-services industry. One client
eliminated the use of paper and styrofoam cups in an all-day meeting (and
delighted her staff!) by ordering inexpensive china mugs with the organization logo in
gold, and greeting participants at the door with a gold pen to mark their
name on their own mugs. I'm sure many of these went back to the office, saving
a lot more throw-away cups.

Because, like you, I live in a rather remote spot, I think twice before
getting on the road. Lots of our work must be done face to face, but quite a bit
can be accomplished via e-mails and conference calls. On one of the projects
I'm currently working on, we spent about half of yesterday's conference call
talking about how to make our weekly calls more productive and helpful.

I wholeheartedly agree that paying attention to the small things helps to
make me more conscious of the larger issues.

Joelle
