hi lisa, and all. i can't believe chris forgot to mention our
"hed-genda" in an os we did on bowen a few years ago. that would be
topics clothes-pinned to the hedge along one side of the yard we were
using for the big circle. there's a picture of it somewhere in our
openspacetech tag at flickr, but i don't have the direct link. m

Steve, thank you for your question. What would the risks be if we opened
space and it wasn't certain to be safe?

Do any of you have experiences which didn't turn out to be safe - and what
happened next in the organization? Do you follow up and ask what happened in
your client's organization, e.g. half a year later?

I hear some people saying they had one experience in Open Space which wasn't
well embedded in the organization and then got frustrated and decided they
would never go for it again. This of course is the worst case and bad
publicity for our passion, Open Space.

Please share your bad experiences, we can all learn tremendously from them.

Love, Catherine

Hope you don't mind a lurker chiming in here. As a guy who has been (and is)
in a couple of those organizations Tennyson mentions....and struggles with
finding a way to open the space, I'd hope that when you get a call from me,
or another explorer, you'll be open to going in there and doing what you
can. Most organizations have some folk who want to move toward better space;
sometimes they're fortunate enough to be in a space where they can assert a
little leadership to start down that path. But it is a dimly lit path and
many of their colleagues will discourage them. Those who've been down it
must come back and light the way, offering guidance and reassurance to the
newbies.

Seems like we have to fight the desire to only open space when we're sure
it's safe?

Zelle--

Fantastic! That was just the sort of low-down I wanted. Now I have a
good idea what you mean.

It is a wonderful way to open some space for people who often find it
closed by the "do-me" meetings so prevalent in our society. You are to
be congratulated for being innovative in opening these spaces.

Which brings me to something you told me off-line a few months ago,
something I think others might be interested in conversing around out
here in the open spaces (if you are willing): how you view opening space
in corporations and hierarchical organizations and similar settings
which seem to me to prefer closed spaces and control. Why spend your
time and energy trying to convince people against their natural
inclinations? Is it not an uphill battle, and would it not be better to
work where the seed could fall on more fertile soil?

Dear Reinhard

=20

What if you asked the client to name a metaphor? In hearing their =
stories,
the metaphor could emerge quite naturally. What was one of their =
greatest
successes? Was there a symbol involved or emerging from this? What do =
they
like or love about their organization? What do they want to hold on to =
no
matter what changes will happen? What has touched them especially in the
past about their work, their passion? What do they do best?=20

=20

I=92m sure you will find the metaphor quite naturally in drawing while =
they
tell you their stories. And you will all recognize it when it appears.=20

=20

Invite the space for it to emerge, and it will. Trust.

=20

Love, Catherine

=20

dear friends of this net,

=20

a client is going to restructure a department with thousends of =
employees.
To spred the new structure he will hold meetings with the senior =
management,
using a metaphorical picture story, which we will create.

=20

To find the right metaphor for this picture story we have a meeting next
week, of 4-5 hours. Who can help with a method to find the fitting =
metaphor?
