Open space during a "lunch for learning"

yes also google and all of us can do lunch for learning. I am convinced -from
one hour collaboration cafe formats we have trialled - this is a huge
opportunity but only if we move up a level from open space and across to other
structures
You know more than me but 3 sub-system interfaces that facscinate me about
open space are :
the invitation phase- wil the people who come be the most passionate people
about one specific context resolution?
the open space itself, which doesnt rush to answers nor to individual
ownership since the innovation values are in the interaction web of flows
the interface after the open phase back to projects in the ordinary world's
environments
hold those 3 interfaces and think of people in an organsiational structure:
they have 2 more ways to space and networek; that inside the organsiation ,
and that they care about as bumping into social or communal needs outside
now suppose any person who wishes to is empowered by an organsiation to
nomiane an issue they care passioately about exploring that is in some way
related to work but potentially very laterally; will thye whole of the
organisation network that person's inviation to a lunch circle in a way that
the 10 people who mst passionately want to explore that issue turn uo at the
same circle
where I have used the word organsiation, it could be any association or
network you belong to (most exciting of all are yout hubs becasue these chnage
schooling forever and essentially multiply a network of montesorri type
learning and co-mentoring circles until a teacher is liberated from
examination books)
but the organsiatioanl structure is: do leaders or whomever's budget of
resources and rulemaking open up the cultural roghts of the structure so that
everyone is encouarged to buy into zeroising degrees of separation ar0und
lunchtime invitation circles; there are for example half-way check points; the
leader's pa could review topics before giving them the zero degree of
separation approval to be an invitation post that goes to everyone

ps anyone around here know Bill Drayton of www.ashoka.org and
www.youthventure.org - I have an odd feeling that the 2 most revolutionary
people for humanity's common sense within 15 miles of the white house have
been netowrking for 30 years without connecting with each other? Love to be
wrong of course!
Quoting john engle <englejohn at hotmail.com>:
greetings.
i presented our DVD circles of change: a quiet revolution at Milton Hershey
School yesterday (the orphanage and school founded by founder of Hershey
Chocolate http://www.mhs-pa.org/ ) and followed it by a mini open space.
numerous people among the 25 present--several of which are in high levels of
leadership--expressed how much they enjoyed it and that "we need to have
more of this."
the school's "Director of Organizational Learning and Leadership
Development" invited me to come to present as part of their "lunch for
learning" programs. it's just one hour and people who are interested sign up
and bring their lunch. i told the group from the outset that following the
DVD i would ask them to decide together which method they'd like to
experience: reflection circles (also known as Touchstones Discussions) or
open space. i stated, "i think it will be more valuable to live it rather
than to talk about it."
1) we watched the abbreviated DVD (11 minutes) and i presented briefly our
story of open space and reflection circles in Haiti (5 minutes).
2) they chose open space and i quickly presented the principles and how it
worked (10 minutes), invited them to propose subjects--6 quickly emerged--
(our topic, which i had ready on a flipchart was "Student Achievement:
Issues and Opportunities")
3) i had the people who proposed them hold rather than post on wall, their
subjects, and go to a corner of the room and invited those interested to
join them (thanks michael herman)
4) their conversations were just 12 minutes
5) we returned to closing circle and did a 10 minute talking stick exercise.
i was surprised by the comments about how interesting and powerful this mini
experience was and how they wanted to continue the conversations that just
began. the person who invited me told me to expect to hear from her about
doing more open space with Milton Hershey School.
best,
john
