OSONOS Hither and Yon (a little on the long side)

Dear Harrison,

No question, I agree: Each OSONOS, should be open for participants from all
over the world, also the smallest local OSONOS. And I agree too, that there
can be hundreds or thousands OSONOS´s gatherings .. small and large ones ..
at the same time or / and spread over the year ... and if not so many in the
present, in the future surely :)

Please help me to understand your point of view better. Do you mean the "old
tradition" of having one MAIN INTERNATIONAL OSONOS (No.XY) per year (like
last year in Halifax and this year in Moscow) is not any more so important
for you, because the number of OST people increases and increases, and
therefore the number of OSONOS events too? I read this a bit between the
lines, but perhaps I misunderstand it completely.

And regarding "Maine" ... I have to look at the map ... it sounds really
fantastic!

Warmly
Gabriela

Gloria for sure -- don't hide your light under a basket, or off line either.
I am sure there are lots of other folks who would like to know. If the
material is humongous, a URL will do.

Gloria, I'm interested too, in what you've written about below, if you
don't mind including me in your off-line information sharing.

I coordinate a "healthy community coalition" in a 4-town region in
Maine, and work on state level HCC processes, so I would like to know
more about the Canadian "coalition/network across non-profit
sub-sectors with a focus on 'building healthy communities.'" I'm hoping
to make a state meeting in Vermont next week, to look at how we do
regional "healthy communities" work in VT/NH/ME, and what learning
circles we might engage in.

I'll rename this thread, in case it continues. The use of OS in broad
regional/community building/linking initiatives seems a bit different
to me than its use in more clearly defined organizations. When there is
a group of people employed by one incorporated organization, and a
Board of Directors for the corporation, a certain amount of structure
and planning (convergence) exists naturally. But when people who live
in a region, who are interested in improving "quality of life" (that
vague catch-all term!), get together, and there may be many community
organizations involved (healthy communities, sustainable communities,
safe communities, and all the sector networks), providing structure for
the work after the OS (or other type of process) is a challenge. (A
link to a good paper about healthy communities work in the US is
www.ncl.org/publications/ncr/92-2/Wolff92-2.pdf and also see
http://www.ncl.org/publications/email_news/2002/05/kellogg.html ).

I'd like to learn more about OS being used in this sort of multi-sector
community-based work.

possible.

I was certainly NOT thinking about some sort of "either/or" -- but very much
a both/and. I suppose that at a broader level I was sensing a need to open
some more space. The annual International OSONOS has certainly made its
contribution -- a definite improvement from the days when such a thing could
only happen in the US of A, or immediately to the North in Canada. We broke
the mold and wonderful things have happened, and continue to happen. I was
just thinking that it may be time to break the mold again. At most of the
recent OSONOS's we have had in the neighborhood of 80-100 participants.
Definitely the right people showing up to create a rich and inspiring
experience. And thanks to the Access Queen, and others of similar
persuasion, barriers were removed or reduced so that more people could
attend. That said, 100 participants is only 20% of the people here on OSLIST
and probably .001% of the total number of everybody using Open Space. This
isn't about getting "everybody" to come, but it is about making nutrient
open space/times available to people who may not have the inclination or
resources to travel long distances. For example, I am working with a group
of students at the American University/NTL Masters Program here in
Washington. They are fascinated by Open Space but for the most part do not
have the history or experience (to say nothing of resources) which might
suck them to Moscow this year. But they might just make it up the coast to
Maine -- or somewhere even closer. These are not total "nubbies" so offering
a sort of training program is neither necessary nor my proposal. We ran into
trouble with that once before and it was very uncomfortable and not to be
done again, I think. OSONOS is primarily for those who have been there and
done that (OS) -- and are now ready to enhance their skills and double their
pleasure. I think this can be done best in the company of similar sorts of
folks at all levels of their OS journey. Bottom line -- More Spaces and
Places.
