Deep Democracy * Open Space * Other systemic methods

I'm not sure I know the word meta as well as you all do. However I think I
just vote for meta

if meta means being able to interface both tools and beings, who both provide
and need them.

Controversially, I dont think open space does enough of a job in particular
cases. Its ok (or miraculous) if when you leave the space you will still have
some structure connecting you all and the-still-to-be-transformed-system-
conflict. But in many networking events to do with global issues we do not
have such an ongoing structure, or should not be assuming we have any positive
supporters of such structure since we wouldnt have a globalisation conflict if
we did have

So I have experienced at least 5 open space events that have gone round the
same wheel; mixed together people with truly global change agendas -such as
whatever Make Poverty History means - impacting localities in despretate need;
saying they will collaborate and cross-fertilise networks etc after OS
finsished but not having the time, resources, attention or even the email
proticols to do so. There's something meta missing, and whatever it is its a
different keep in touch practice than OS itself

And worse, since I have been tracking globalisation trends for 21 years, the
conflicts are still getting greater (the pure economics ones of global*local
power we have not yet started to turn round http://valuerisk.blogspot.com
http://economicstimes.blogspot.com http://fantasywealth.blogspot.com ). From a
system mappers point of view, we have about 5 years to start getting turnround
on some agenda 6 billion people can see is turnround - after which the scale
of unnecessary disasters befalling people because we didnt get to meta in time
will be desperate (and not just today's dismal)

Chris, I think you still are missing the point, at least my point. The core
issue, as I see it, is not OS as a method, but rather the passion of the
people involved which might lead them to follow through on their
commitments, or at least apparent commitments. People make choices with
their time and their lives. What may seem critical at the moment will often
become a minor concern when seen in the larger scheme of things. And maybe
more to the point, what you may deem to be critical, may not appear in the
same light to others. And by the same token, your schedule for follow
through may not be theirs. Of course we could, can and do extend the
possibility for action electronically and with follow on gatherings. In
effect we can and must make every effort to keep the space open. But at the
end of the day, and indeed on every day -- it is the peoples' choice.

It may well be true that "they" (whoever "they are) are making tragically
wrong decisions. It may be equally true that in 5 years time the fruits of
these decisions will come home to roost through some global disaster. But
none of this, I think, changes the reality that the choice remains with the
people. And personally, I wouldn't have it any other way -- which is
probably fortunate, as I doubt there is any other way it could be. In the
interim, my personal commitment is to continue opening space in which
meaningful reflection, choices, plans for action, and action itself can take
place. Whether any of this occurs remains to be seen, but to date we seem to
have muddled through, and I see no reason to believe that our capacity for
muddling has evaporated. Truthfully, I think it has been a marvelous show,
however, when it is over, it is over -- but not quite yet.
