Culture survey - metaphors

Hallo all

I take the view that culture is not something you can measure in any kind of
a numeric way - to do so creates spurious statistical results as well trying
to number something which cannot be counted. (On a scale of 1 to 100 - how
beautiful is that tree?)

So what I have done in the past is ask people to produce metaphors /
analogies:

Using post-it notes - ask everyone to think of a metaphor for the x
organisation - giving two eg:
The x organisation is like a butterfly - because it looks great but it flits
from one thing to another
Or
The x organisation is like a well oiled machine - because it works hard and
coherently generating positive energy for its stakeholders
Post up the metaphors in two places for everyone to read
Allow people to say what this says about the culture of the organisation

Hope this helps the debate

Jon
