New Year's Note

Dear Marei,

When you said:
I believe I serve others and myself best with not suffering with them but
with staying in my good feeling and my sense of that everything that happens
is just the only thing that could have?"

It reminded me of a powerful exchange at our Spirited Work gathering
immediately following the Practice of Peace conference we had in November
2003 outside Seattle. During an evening circle, someone from quiet Whidbey
Island was expressing his disgust that we could be so light-hearted given
all of the suffering in the world. A man who was with us from Northern
Ireland, who earlier in the conference had told of his sister's dying from
the violence there, said to him, "My sister would be honored by what you do
in this place." I'm para-phrasing now but he said that it was of great
importance to know that people and places of such peace, comfort and joy
existed in the world.

Gil -- many thanks for the information on resources and for the amazing work
you do. (And I must let you know that the quote: All that is essential for
the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. is from English
philosopher Edmund Burke.)

from still amazingly sunny and crisp Seattle,
Peggy

Dear Judi,
thank you very much for sharing your way of understanding.
You expressed what I am feeling and could not put in words - asking myself
"am I heartless because I believe I serve others and myself best with not
suffering with them but with staying in my good feeling and my sense of that
everything that happens is just the only thing that could have?" Which does
include being compassionate and supportive and helping whereever I can. But
still full of joy for life.
There is a sentence that came to my mind some weeks ago. And whenever
something that I tend to judge as 'negative' happens in (my) life, I ask
myself this little question:
"I wonder what good will come out of this?"
Wishing all of us a good new year 2005 - in whatever way it may show itself.
Marei
