John Cage

I think my very first post to this list was a quote about John Cage's most
famous composition which is called, if I recall correctly, 4:33,
representing four minutes and thirty three seconds. The pianist plays one
note and then there is silence for 4:33. . . that is about as open as music
can get. I imagine an audience gathered in a darkened concert setting, with
light focussed on the silent piano and silent pianist, each person hearing
their own sound. This allows the musician and the listener to create for
themselves. For me, the really great thing is that I can hear this song any
time I wish and each time I do decide to listen to 4:33 my inner life is
electric with possibilities.

Can't get much more open than that, methinks. Thanks, Alex, for reminding
me of Cage.
