Sometimes we work for "expenses only."   I've also learned, when approached
about a project, to ask, "Do you have a budget for this, or are you asking for
a donation?"   I might say "Yes" either way (or "No," but it clarifies the
situation and serves as a reminder that this is my livelihood.
