Dear Listers

A cynic is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of no thing.

The on-going discussion on implementation and post-event reality is
very important. Here are some observations:

1. If there is enough time during an event, participants will take
the time for detailed action planning and will have a plan to take
back into their world.

2. If participants don't have enough time, they can find a way to
meet back at work with or without sponsor support to make things
happen. In one day events, we ask sponsors to provide a way for
participants to sign-up before leaving to work on post event
implementation of priorities. Another approach is to meet quickly
after the event and appoint a co-ordinator who will hold a meeting at
an agreed date and time.

3. But aren't we overlooking a basic fact of organisational life? If
people decide they want to change something owned and committed to
during a large group event, it is up to them to make it happen. Of
course, it is easier to do this with sponsor support and most
sponsors ought to be pleased to have the commitment and energy behind
some thing positive from the bottom-up because it should be for the
benefit of everyone.

4. If there appear to be no tangible outcomes implemented after an
event, who knows what subtle changes have occured in mindsets and
attitudes to involve others to reach consensus through participation?
Large groups do impact on organisational culture, but changing
culture can take a very, very long time. Large groups can accelerate
this change process, but sometimes it always is not apparent,
especially when people are excited, have high energy and want instant
results.

Regards from a cool Edinburgh heading into winter and wishing you all
some peace, some where

Cheers

Kerry
