Chris--

To the great resources that Michael and Harrison mentioned, I can add some
personal examples:

An elementary school was having difficulty implementing a restructuring
mandated by the state. An Open Space provided the opportunity to talk about fears
and concerns, and search for solutions. All of the ideas proposed were
implemented in a period of a few months, and the restructuring was accomplished in
a way that was acceptable to the whole staff.

Two organizations who work with foster children held an Open Space conference
and invited the community to help them find solutions to unmet needs. This
meeting resulted in the establishment of new programs, especially for older
teenagers who were leaving foster care, with significant help by volunteers from
the community.

I'm currently working with a not-for-profit organization that is using Open
Space very effectively to bring staff concerns about a coming move and
reorganization out in the open, so identified problems can be solved. There's less fea
r now about the move, and several task forces to work on specific issues are
carrying on the work they started in the Open Space.
