SV: OST meeting about "Creating balance at work and in life"

Dear Chris and Joelle
I agree the conference was successful and the sponsors are really happy
about how it all went. Neither me or they felt any big worry when no one
stepped up to take an issue further. I made it clear that this was an
opportunity if someone had a passion to work on with others, if not it was
OK. Why they/we chose to open ut the opportunity for collective action was
to give a chance for new networks to form between the organizations. Of
course some of those networks were born, but just not according to the
plan;)

I have a picture in my head that in some other cultures people are more keen
on getting up and exposing themselves. In Sweden it?s not OK to show that
you "think you are somebody" (that?s the "Jantelaw"). I don?t think it makes
much of a difference in the opening and agendasetting, but have more a
feeling it does in occasions like this.

I agree that this shift is hard after such a full day, and that was quite
clear. The "personal convergence" used in PoP conference sounds great I have
used similair ways at times and it worked nicely.
Warmest regards to you all
Thomas

Thomas:

It sounds like a long day. I think that an extra half day for any kind
of work to get ideas out of the room is always helpful. It's not always
possible but the benefits far outweigh the costs in my experience. It
can be a real challenge to have people engage deeply on a topic and then
shift into a different mode late in the day. Sleep helps. I think your
oberservation about walking their talk is right on!

Joelle wrote about the Practice of Peace conference ending, which I also
found lovely. The space was opened again for folks to grab paper and
write their commitment and then post it on a wall. It gave everyone a
chance to speak, encouraged personal commitment and allowed for a little
bit of time speaking to the group without the closing circle going on
for a long time. I don't know who dreamed up that ending but it was
perfect for what we were doing, and might be the kind of thing you could
add to next year's conference! (There will be another one next year
right? ;-) )

Chris
