Hi Florian,
I own a pruning hook and use it for brush clearing.
From
http://www.educagri.fr/hedges/eng/glossary/detail.cfm?code=248
the following definition
A long-armed hook
<http://www.educagri.fr/hedges/eng/glossary/detail.cfm?code=610> used
for delimbing
<http://www.educagri.fr/hedges/eng/glossary/detail.cfm?code=234>,lopping
<http://www.educagri.fr/hedges/eng/glossary/detail.cfm?code=253> and
brush clearing
<http://www.educagri.fr/hedges/eng/glossary/detail.cfm?code=206>, with a
heavy, rather straight blade with a more or less curved end. See
delimbing knife
<http://www.educagri.fr/hedges/eng/glossary/detail.cfm?code=235>. Some
double-edged models have a notch on the back used to push cut branches
out of the way.
See the web page above for an illustration:

The pruning-hook was an implement used by vine-dressers. It appears
that the Hebrews were accustomed regularly to prune their vines
*(Leviticus 25:3; John 15:2)*.
