dissertation - 1611, from L. dissertationem (nom. dissertatio)
"discourse," from dissertare "debate, argue," frequentive of disserere
"discuss, examine," from dis- "apart" + serere "to arrange words." Sense
of "formal, written treatise" is 1651.

Reminds me of our colleague Allison Baensch - wasn't her dissertation -
are you there, Allison?  Created with a process for random selection of
words? Er.'arranged' words?
